A lack of business amid the COVID-19 pandemic has forced a downtown State College eatery to permanently close.

Sadie's Gourmet Waffles, 118 S. Pugh St., announced Thursday afternoon on Facebook that it shutting its doors following nearly six years in business.

"We are saddened to tell our incredible loyal customers that Sadie's Waffles has closed permanently!" the Facebook post said. "We appreciate all the fantastic people we have met and hope that you can remember the joy our incredible waffles and baked goods with great memories.

"The Covid 19 dilemma has forced us to close since we are a downtown business and no one is here for us to serve."

Cindy Walk opened Sadie's in late 2014 at the corner of South Pugh Street and East Calder Way. The restaurant was named after a woman, Sadie DuPont, who Walk and her husband met while traveling in Belgium in 2007. The woman was selling waffles from a food truck and offered the Walks her recipe.

“We told Sadie that if we ever started a restaurant, we’d name it after her,” Walk said in 2017. “We mail her pictures of the restaurant and the waffles because she doesn’t use the Internet."

Sadie's specialized in authentic Liege waffles, but also offered baked goods made from scratch, as well as breakfast sandwiches and a lunch menu.
