Sandusky Defense Requests Two Week Extension to File Post-Sentence Motions

by on November 13, 2012 2:16 PM

Jerry Sandusky's defense team has asked for an additional two weeks to file his appeal after lead counsel Norris Gelman suffered a heart attack, had subsequent open heart surgery and spent part of October recovering, unable to work.

According to court documents filed on Tuesday, the defense team asked for an extension through Nov. 16. Previously, Judge John Cleland gave the defense a deadline of Nov. 9 to file an post-sentence motions.

A hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Dec. 10 in the Centre County Courthouse.

On Oct. 18, Sandusky's defense team filed an appeal on his behalf, citing too little time to sift through the massive amounts of discovery material received from prosecutors before trial, which should have been pushed back. The defense team filed motions for continuance three times before going to trial in June.

Sandusky, 68, was sentenced on Oct. 9 to 30-60 years behind bars for his sex crimes. He was convicted on June 22 on 45 of 48 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. He is serving his life sentence in SCI Greene, a maximun-security prison, where he spends 23 hours a day in a single cell.
