Saturday is 'Character Day' for Kids at the People's Choice Festival

The People's Choice Festival, a celebration of all things quintessentially Pennsylvania, is also a hub of fun for children, featuring "Character Day" on Saturday.

Held on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, the festival appeals to families with children of all ages with daily attractions – most of which are free.

Today, kids can meet, greet and take photos with Pittsburgh Pierogy, Ike the Spike, QWiKie, Merf Dog, Zippy the Zebra and Steemer, of the Altoona Curve – just to name some of them.

With myriad room for children to run, play and enjoy the day, all of the children's activities are in the center of the artisan booths and food tents so parents easily can keep a close watch on their brood.

A major attraction for children is the JUMP THIS!, a big, playground-style inflatable, which is up each day of the festival.

Face painting is provided by the State College High Thespians, where donations are always welcome to aid the students' productions.

Inside the Youth Artisan Tent, children can make their own arts and crafts as well as view the samples made by others.

On Sunday, the State High Thespians will be back to perform "Storytime Theatre."

Only two out of all of the children's activities requires a small fee: Little Smilin' Choo Choo and the pony rides, where all funds are donated Ashburn's Animals on a Mission.

All ages can ride the Little Smilin' Choo Choo – "Remember, you're never too old to ride the train!"
