SCASD Cleaning Up Mold at 3 Schools

This summer's heavy rain has caused mold to develop at three State College Area schools.

In a letter to families sent on Friday, Superintendent Bob O'Donnell said clean-up efforts were already ongoing at Mount Nittany Middle School when mold was identified at Corl Street and Radio Park elementary schools.

"This summer’s record rainfall has caused unusually humid conditions for an extended period of time, resulting in excessive moisture inside the buildings," O'Donnell wrote. "Insufficient airflow and the higher-than-normal humidity combined to create an environment conducive to mold growth."

At Corl Street, the mold was found in two exterior modular units that are being used while construction and renovations are under way at the school. Radio Park's basement flooded during recent heavy rainfall, causing mold in the basement room.

Remediation efforts are continuing at Mount Nittany Middle School and clean up has begun at Corl Street and Radio Park.

"This process includes air quality testing, and at this point, none of the mold has been identified as 'black' (Stachybotrys) mold," O'Donnell wrote. "Led by two independent contractors, the approach to testing and remediation will be consistent at all three schools."

Based on updates from contractors, district officials believe that remediation will be completed and each school will be certified safe to open on the first day of school, Aug. 27.

As of now, Mount Nittany Middle School remains closed until Tuesday, Aug. 21. With the exception of the exterior modular units, Corl Street remains open. Radio Park is closed for construction work and is expected to be open on Tuesday as planned.

O'Donnell said the district will provide further updates to families. Monitoring is continuing at every district building.
