Schlow Celebrates Children’s Book Week

Children’s Book Week is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and Schlow Centre Region Library will once again be participating in the nationwide celebration. The longest-running nationwide literacy initiative in the country will take place April 29 through May 5 this year.

Children’s Book Week originated in the belief that children’s books and literacy are life-changers. Last year, more than 700 libraries, bookstores, and schools across the country hosted Book Week storytimes, activity hours and more.

This year, Schlow has two events in conjunction with Children’s Book Week. On Thursday, May 2, “Snore-y Time with Dory and Nemo” will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Downsbrough Community Room. Recommended for kids ages 2 to 7, children can wear their pajamas to a special evening storytime with Dory and Nemo. The guests of honor will be available for photos with friends after storytime.

Schlow also will be holding its first May Coloring Contest. The contest is for children ages 3 to 12, and the coloring page can be picked up at the Children’s Desk. The submission deadline is 6 p.m. Friday, May 31 and each child can submit one entry. Children can use crayons, colored pencils, or markers. Winners will be chosen by a random drawing and notified on June 7. Winners may choose a prize book or a prize from Schlow’s treasure chest. All entries will be displayed in the Children’s Department.

“From Mother Bruce and Elephant and Piggie to Harry Potter and Dog Man, we love children’s books and are proud to celebrate Children’s Book Week here at Schlow Library,” says Paula Bannon, head of children’s services at Schlow. “Our special ‘Snore-y Time’ and coloring contest are just the start of activities your family will enjoy throughout the summer. Stay tuned for more information about our exciting Summer Reading Program.”
