Schlow Celebrating End of Summer with Family Fun Week

on August 19, 2018 5:00 AM

Summer is winding down, kids will be heading back to school and it’s time for one last blast of fun before the school bells ring.

Schlow Centre Region Library will help families enjoy that last ounce of summer fun with its Family Fun Week, Monday, Aug. 20, through Friday, Aug. 24. Each day will feature activities and events for children of all ages.

“The idea for Family Fun Week came about because several families have commented in past summers that there’s not much to do in State College the week before school starts,” said Paula Bannon, head of children’s services.

“Most of the local camps have ended at that point and families are just looking for activities to do before the regular school routine starts again. The Grange Fair is happening, but not everyone has the opportunity to travel to that. So, we decided to have some special activities that week.”

Some of the highlights include:

■ “Build Your Own Website,” Monday, Aug. 20

Kids who have completed fourth through sixth grades can build a website to share with their friends and family.

■ “Rockin’ Reptiles,” Tuesday, Aug. 21

Reptile expert Jesse Rothacker, of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, will explore some of the beats and rhythms of reptiles.

■ “Learn to Drum,” Wednesday, Aug. 22

Participants can enjoy a workshop on group drumming, rhythmic games and social interaction.

■ “Life-Sized Candy Land,” Thursday, Aug. 23

Families can sign up in advance for a time slot to play.

■ “Book Bingo,” Friday, Aug. 24

Kids can win books to add to their personal libraries.

The week also will include a baby/toddler playtime, an origami class and the “Read It, Watch It” program’s screening of “The Lego Ninjago Movie” at The State Theatre on Wednesday, Aug. 22.
