School Board Grants to Bid the West Side Bleacher Project for Memorial Field
The State College Area School Board of Directors will listen to bids in March to renovate the West Side bleachers in Memorial Field and gave permission for the district to start the bid at its regular meeting Monday night.
The unanimous approval – two board members were absent due to illness Monday – is to bid the project only, it is not approval of the actual project. The bid includes replacement of both the upper and lower walls on the Fraser Street side of the stadium, fencing along Fraser Street, and the west bleacher assembly.
The West End bleacher project is 'Phase One' of the entire Memorial Field renovation project.
At a later date, the board may consider replacing the artificial turf surface as a follow-up to this initial phase. The project does not include the previously discussed stormwater vaults. Alternate arrangements for spring sports have been made. As of Monday, middle school field hockey will move to the Mount Nittany campus, while boys and girls lacrosse will move to Fogelman fields and Spring Creek Park fields, through an agreement with Centre Region Parks and Recreation.
"As portions of the seventy-plus year-old stadium near the end of their useful life, we are proactively planning replacement projects, rather than waiting for additional loss of use of this facility."
The bid will be awarded on March 25 and the project is expected to cost around $2.1 million, according to the school district.
Poprik said the field will be open for fall sports and while the intent was not to impact spring sports, there is no alternative to complete the project that will not interfere with the regular season.
The board postponed voting to adopt the proposed 2013-14 budget because of the absent members. It will be rescheduled for discussion and a vote.
