Seasonable Weather Awaits Pennsylvania Deer Hunters

on November 29, 2010 1:44 AM

Seasonably cool and dry weather will greet hunters across Pennsylvania on Monday as the state's rifle deer-hunting season begins.

Forecasts provided by AccuWeather.com show that rain-free skies should prevail throughout central Pennsylvania. In the State College area, conditions will be partly sunny with a high of 44 degrees, according to the AccuWeather.com forecast. Before dawn, temperatures will dip into the mid-20s.

Statewide, the Pennsylvania Game Commission expects about 750,000 deer hunters to take to the state's forests Monday. Through Friday, rifle hunters in Centre County and adjacent districts will be able to hunt for antlered deer only. Then, from Saturday through Dec. 11, hunters in this part of the state will be able to hunt for both antlered and antler-less deer. (Hunters in other parts of the state will be able to hunt for both antlered and antler-less deer Monday through Dec. 11. Details are available via the Game Commission website.)

The commission has reminded hunters that, under state rules, they're required to wear at least 250 square inches of fluorescent orange material on their heads, chests and backs at all times while they're hunting. In addition, if using firearms, they're not allowed to hunt, chase or disturb deer within 150 yards of any occupied building without the occupant's permission. For those using bows or crossbows, the limit is 50 yards.

Further, the Game Commission reiterated that any hunter who takes a deer must fill out a harvest tag and attach it to the deer's ear before moving the carcass. The commission is encouraging hunters to report their harvests through the commission website.
