Second High School Community Forum Introduces Estimated Project Costs

From renovations only to the current high school to a full-scale new building on a new site, the high school project could cost anywhere from $65 million to $160 million.

With a referendum scheduled for November, the State College Area School Board of Directors is making every effort to fully include each member of the community in the process toward launching the high school project so that taxpayers and voters are aware of the costs going into the potential renovation or rebuild and how it will affect them. 

The second community forum was hosted Thursday night and more than 100 people attended, with more State High students in the crowd than the first time around. Amy Yurko, the district's Educational Planner, did not present although was present at the forum. 

Each option district officials are considering for the high school has its own cost. 

Option A:  New construction. Build one new building for grades 9-10 and another new building for grades 11-12 on the North Building site with a total demolition of both the current North and South - $135.8-$142.8 million

B: Additions and renovations to both the North and South Buildings - $112.2-$118 million

C: Renovations only to the North and South Building - $65-$68.2 million

D1: New construction: build one new school for grades 9-12 on the South Building site with a total demolition of the current North and South Building - $115-$121 million. 

D2: Additions and renovations: provide additions and renovations to the South Building for grades 9-12 with a partial demolition of the current North and South buildings - $111.5-$117 million

D3: New construction, build one new school for grades 9-12 on the South Building site with a total demolition of the current South Building and a partial demolition of the current North Building with the rest renovated - $121.3-$127.6 million

E1: New construction: Build one new school for grades 9-12 on an entirely new site $121-$127 million

(The district has considered the appraised value of the Westerly Parkway site to be $115-$121 million

F: New construction, build one new school for grades 9-12 on the South Building site and one new school for grades 9-12 on a new site with a total demolition of the current South Building and a partial demolition of the North Building – $153.9-$161.8 milion

District officials said operations costs are being estimated and the above totals include demolition costs. 

The repayment period would be over 30 years and a 20-25 year repayment plan may also be considered.
