Smeal Ranked Top 30 Business School

by and on April 08, 2014 6:30 AM

Penn State’s Smeal College of Business is the 30th-best undergraduate business school in the country, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. The College fell four spots from its No. 26 ranking last year.

Smeal at Penn State is ranked third in the Big Ten, behind only Indiana’s Kelley School of Business (8th) and Michigan’s Ross School of Business (12th), and second overall in total enrollment (at 5,405 students) behind Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce.

Smeal graduates dominated employment in the Big Four — the four largest accounting firms in the country — as PwC, Deloitte, E&Y, and KPMG are some of the greatest job and internship providers to Penn State alums and students.

Smeal also posted a few rather bleak numbers, with its average student graduating with over $50,000 in student loans and other outstanding debt, which is barely lower than the average yearly starting salary ($54,000) for a Smeal graduate. The undergraduate business school is not very diverse, either as 79 percent of Smeal students are white and 65 percent are male.

However, despite these downsides, Smeal students seem to be in-demand, according to the survey.

Here are some stats about Smeal, courtesy of Businessweek:

  • Average Starting Salary: $54,000
  • Job Offers for Graduating Seniors: 78%
  • Percentage of Internships that are paid: 85%
  • Top employers: PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG
  • Top internship employers: PwC, Johnson & Johnson, KPMG, E&Y, Deloitte
  • Top careers: Financial Services, Consulting, Petroleum/Energy, Supply Chain Management
  • Average alumni gift: $518
  • Total living alumni: 67,164
