Special Events Planned to Celebrate Park and Recreation Month in the Centre Region

by on June 28, 2018 5:00 AM

July is Park and Recreation Month, and Centre Region Parks and Recreation is celebrating with a number of special activities to help residents discover some of the great things happening in public spaces around the area.

From the first-ever Welch Pool Cardboard Regatta to naturalist programs to a park scavenger hunt, the monthlong celebration will include fun activities for all ages and abilities.

An initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association, Park and Recreation Month is meant to showcase not just the many usual activities and features that come to mind -- like summer camps, playgrounds and ball fields -- but also the ways parks and recreation can improve quality of life, such as STEM programs, active adult offerings, health and wellness opportunities and environmental education.

“CRPR strives to provide programming and facilities to meet a variety of community needs, Pam Salokangas, CRPR director, said in a release.

"The impact can be felt through better health via exercise programs; improved diet through the provision of community garden plots; additional access to healthy meals by participating in the free summer lunch program; increased awareness and knowledge of environmental impact to reduce animal/plant/human conflict; access to open spaces for all to enjoy and to reduce stress; and a myriad of other impacts."

Some of the special activities planned include the annual Fourth of July Kids on Wheels Parade, with bike decorating at 7 p.m.on July 3 at Holmes Foster Park. Also on independence day is the Welch Pool Cardboard Regatta, with people ages 6 and up bringing homemade boats out made of only cardboard, paperboard and duct tape to race in the pool (register by July 2).

Looking for more fun on the water? A Wibit obstacle course will be at Welch and Park Forest pools each weekend (alternating Saturdays and Sundays for the two locations) and late-night swims will be held at Welch on July 11 and Park Forest on July 18.

Kids ages 6 to 13 can take part in the Pedal, Splash and Dash Youth Triathlon, a fun and challenging way to tackle their first triathlon, on July 21 at Welch Pool.

Learn about the wonders of nature in our local parks, with Millbrook Marsh Naturalist at Blue Spring Park in Boalsburg on July 7 and with Centred Outdoors' guided adventure on July 29 at Millbrook Marsh.

Future Stars Baseball “State College Slugfest" hits Hess Field on July 21 and 22 and USA Softball Pennsylvania State Championships come to Oak Hall Regional Park on July 28 and 29.

Check out the full calendar here and visit the CRPR website to register for activities.
