U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey have announced the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded $546,759 to Central Pennsylvania through the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. The funding was included in the recently enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Altoona will receive $126,841, Allegheny Township $15,881 and Logan Township $27,637.

Senator Specter says the funding will have tremendous impact on local communities by enhancing safety through advanced law enforcement programs and criminal justice initiatives.

According to Senator Casey one of the objectives of the recovery plan is to help governments revitalize their communities and these funds will help make communities safer.

The Byrne program is a grant program designed to help state and local governments control and prevent crime and further develop the criminal justice system.
