State College Area Experiences Above-Average Rainfall So Far This Summer

Rainfall levels more than doubled this July from last year’s measurements after an abundance of thunderstorms that produced heavy rainfall swamped the State College area.

Erik Pindrock, a meteorologist at AccuWeather, says the area recorded close to seven inches of rainfall last month, up from the total of 3.2 inches for July 2012. The recorded rainfall for the months of June and July is also double the average for the two months.

“We’ve certainly been on the wetter side of the average by far,” he says.

The abundance of rainfall has also affected temperatures, Pindrock says. During the first two-thirds of July, the State College area experienced a stretch of days where highs were in the 90s, making it feel “somewhat tropical for our area,” Pindrock says. However, the end of month saw less wet conditions and more comfortable temperatures in the mid-70s.

Pindrock says the moderate weather will carry over into the beginning of August with some below-average temperatures. AccuWeather forecasts highs in the mid-70s for this weekend with a slight chance of rain on Saturday. Pindrock says the area recorded temperatures in the low 80s at the same time last year.

“All in all, we should have a mainly comfortable weekend,” he says. “Saturday we may have a shower or storm, but it’s certainly not looking like an all-day rain.”

As far as hurricane and tropical storm season, AccuWeather has recorded four named tropical storms this season. None have reached hurricane strength, but Tropical Storm Andrea, which ripped through the eastern coast from Florida to Maine in early June, was the most powerful so far.

“It brought a lot of rain from Florida, up to the Carolinas and eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southern New England,” he says.

And despite all the rain State College has received this summer, Pindrock says not much of it was caused by Tropical Storm Andrea.

“The thunderstorms we’ve gotten have been, depending on where you are, really heavy,” he says. “Just about everywhere here, we’ve had an above-average summer as far as rainfall.”
