State College High School Boys Basketball Hope to Continue Winning Ways

A closer look at the 2012-13 State College Area High School boys' basketball team:

Coach — Drew Frank

2011 Record — 18-5

Returning letter winners — Connor Shadle, Kyle Kanaskie, Jason Costa, Bryan Sekunda and Connor Nodell

Strengths — As head coach for State College Area High School boys’ basketball team for 17 years, Frank believes that understanding how the game is played is among the greatest strengths a basketball team can have. “We have a very high basketball IQ. The guys really understand how I want the game to be played. In addition to that, we have a really high skill level,” he said.

Concerns — “I think our biggest concerns are things that are outside of our control. Size and athleticism are the two biggest concerns I have, but the guys have no control over that,” Frank said. But they have work very hard to try to minimize that through their skills. It is really their skill level at work.”

Season outlook— Frank said he doesn’t like to focus on the outcome of an entire season because he and his team have no control over the outcome. “All we have control over is our effort level and our focus. Let’s go out and execute the things that we worked on. I expect our guys to do that. I think if they do that, I think in spite of size and God-given athleticism, I expect that our guys are going to be successful,” he said.

Early season — Both Frank and the team are looking forward to the start of the season as a way to put the pieces of a successful team together. “You’ve just got to figure things out. I think are guys will be patient with that. They understand that also, so at the beginning of the season, we are looking for ‘let’s see where we are.’ We get a very early read. We have a very challenging schedule right up front, so the guys will get a read on where we are,” he said. “I think they understand also you have to learn how as a team to compete and how to beat quality teams.” Frank said the team’s tip-off tournament and their first two games against Central Dauphin and Central Dauphin East will help to show the team what they are made of.
