State College High School Football Looks to Improve to 2-0 at Central Mountain
Usually, Bethlehem Liberty gives State College a better game than the 26-7 pounding the Little Lions administered on the opening night of high school football last Friday.
The State High defense held the Hurricanes to 249 yards of total defense, including a mere 42 yards rushing on 26 carries.
That won't bode well for the Little Lions' next opponent.
State College (1-0) travels to Mill Hall Friday night to face District 6 opponent Central Mountain (1-0), a 40-21 winner of Williamsport in its opener.
While State College's defense controlled the tempo of the game a week ago, the Little Lions rushed for 247 yards against Liberty, with Andrew Kelly and Patrick Irwin gaining 77 and 75 yards, respectively.
State College's running game could be a huge problem for the Wildcats, who allowed Williamsport a mere 144 yards of total offense while scoring three first-half touchdowns on drives of 29, 21 and 20 yards following Millionaires' turnovers.
Ian Fennessey kicked a 48-yard field goal in the opener for the Little Lions. Junior quarterback Patrick Irwin was productive with his first start under center and orchestrated several long scoring drives over the course of the game.
Senior Andrew Kelley rushed for two touchdowns and put together a strong start after rushing for 637 yards and seven TDs last season.
