State College Retailers Offer Unique Gifts for Dad this Father's Day
If a tie or grill just isn't going to cut it this year for dad, businesses in downtown State College can help shoppers think outside the box this Father's Day.
Sending dad to the spa isn't a typical father's day gift, but Moriah Gilmore Gause, owner of A Step Beyond Massage Therapy, says fathers are the perfect candidates for a deep tissue massage.
"We specialize in deep tissue ... which is fantastic men and women, but specifically for fathers when you think about all of the hard work they do, not just picking up and carrying around the kids, but working around the house, doing their regular jobs," says Gilmore Gause. "They get a lot of physical strain in their muscles and dads don't usually complain about these things, but they'll build up a lot of tension."
Gilmore Gause says dads tend to have lower back pain from carrying heavy loads and shoulder and neck pain from working at a computer.
"Having a deep tissue massage can really help relax those muscles and get that pain out," she says.
After a massage, dad may want to keep the spa day going with a professional haircut at Looks Hair Design, which includes a consultation, head massage, cut and style. The salon has a full line of men's hair care products and offers perks like a Bare Mineral tinted moisturizer to brighten a man's skin.
A gift that gets dad out on the town is a gift certificate for performances of the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra.
"A dad could take his family or his spouse to one of our concerts with season tickets. I think it would be a really nice non-traditional gift for someone to look forward to in the future," says Susan Kroeker, executive director of Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra. "Our concerts are top notch."
For gift certificate or ticket information contact Kroeker at 814-234-8313.
Does dad have a favorite book? For a minimum of a $20 donation, a tribute book can be placed in the Schlow Centre Region Library collection under dad's name. All tribute books also have an entry in the catalog record of the honoree's name. Print books include a bookplate in the front cover.
For dads with a sense of humor, check out the Grumpy Cat meme collection at The Animal Kingdom where they offer a mix and match keychain/carabiner clip, which owner Lindsay Williamson says would be a "cute, fun and humorous" gift.
Grumpy Cat is named after a real cat, Tardar Sauce, whose grumpy facial expression went viral after a photo was posted on Reddit.
The keychains feature various grumpy phrases and come with a stuffed version of Grumpy Cat, including one wearing a tie. They can be used for keys, briefcases or a gym bag.
"Dads with a sarcastic sense of humor would appreciate it," Williamson says.
For traditional Father's Day gifts with a Penn State twist, McClanahan's Penn State Room offers a tool set with Penn State logos.
"Who wouldn't want to show off their Penn State Pride while working," says store manager Jennifer Schoch.
Also new at the store are Joe Paterno items under a recent licensing deal with the Paterno family. Schoch says a Joe Paterno canvas is already a popular item.
