State College School District May Sell College Heights Property

The State College Area School District Board of Directors says it's received an offer for the College Heights School on North Atherton Street.

The prospective buyer has not been identified.

In a statement, the school board says it has given informal approval to the deal. Details of the offer have not been made public. The property was not listed for sale and the offer is the only one that's been made.

According to the SCASD website the College Heights School, located at 721 North Atherton Street, was built in 1931. The 14,000 square foot structure sits on two acres of land.

The school board has told State College Borough about the proposal. The borough has the first right-of-refusal on all district-owned property located within the borough.

The school board expects to take formal action during a regular public meeting once it's heard back from borough officials. It's not clear whether State College has any interest in buying the property which is in a prime location, just blocks from the Penn State campus.

In 2012, The school district asked the borough if it wanted to buy the property. That idea was shelved last year because the district was considering using the building for a school program. That's no longer the case. The district says there is no need for the building in the future.

The school board says it will also notify the Centre Region Planning Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Once the sale has been cleared, the district will petition the Centre County Court of Common Please for approval, which is required by the school code. Details will be made public and the public will have input on the sale.

If the property is sold, proceeds will be used for other capital needs in the school district.
