State College Weekend Plans: Friday, Feb. 4, to Sunday, Feb. 6

Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester star in "The Roommate," a story about an unstable college freshman who becomes dangerously obsessed with her new roommate.  

Also new to theatres this week is "Sanctum," a 3D thriller following an underwater dive team into a life-threatening expedition of the world’s least accessible cave system.

Bald Eagle Middle/High School will be performing “Clue” at 7 p.m. Friday. The performance is based on the board game, but includes a modern-day twist.


Penn State ice hockey takes on Rhode Island at 9 p.m. at the Penn State ice rink.

Penn State men’s swimming and diving competes against Buffalo in the McCoy Natatorium at 4 p.m.

Eighth-ranked Penn State men’s volleyball hosts No. 7 UC Irvine Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Rec Hall. The game will be streamed live on

Saturday, Feb. 5


Today is another great day to head to Slab Cabin Park on Elmwood Street. Conditions permitting, the slope is open during the day as well as under the lights from 5 to 11 p.m.


State College Summer Youth Fair will take place at Mount Nittany Middle School on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will host the largest gathering of representatives from youth programs all over central Pennsylvania, including Camp Blue Diamond, The Art Alliance of Central PA and Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Starting at 9 a.m. Home Depot will feature its monthly children’s workshop. This month’s Build a Heart Shelf lasts until noon and teaches kids do-it-yourself skills and tool safety. Workshops are designed for children ages 5 to 12.


The second and final showing of “Clue” takes place Saturday at Bald Eagle Area Middle/School at 7 p.m.

The Steel Wheels headline the Acoustic Brew Concert at the Center for Well-Being Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Steel Wheels will combine bluegrass, blues, old-time sing-a-longs, and “fiddle-tunes” into an energetic but traditional show.


Mount Nittany Vineyard, located on Houser Road, hosts chocolate pairings sponsored by The Boalsburg Chocolate Company. Pairings begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Reservations are required and the cost is $3 per person.


Penn State hockey takes the ice at 3:30 p.m. to battle Rhode Island.

Penn State men and women’s swimming and diving competes against Lehigh at 11 a.m.

Penn State men’s tennis plays a double-header today beginning at 9 a.m. vs. NC State and Bloomsburg at 2 p.m.

Penn State men’s volleyball plays Cal State Northridge at 7:30 p.m.

Penn State men and women’s track and field host the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, taking place all day at the Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility, located behind the Bryce Jordan Center. This will be Penn State’s first “Pink” meet supporting the fight against breast cancer; donations will be accepted in place of admission.

Late Night

The Zak Sobel Band takes the stage at The Darkhorse Tavern at 10 p.m. Happy hour begins at 9 p.m. with half-priced liquor and specialty pints.

Sunday, Feb. 6


Bundle up and head to The Blue Spring Park for Skating at the Village Ice Rink. Skating is free and fun for all ages.

DVD Releases

Hilary Swank stars in "Conviction" as a single mother putting herself through law school in order to defend her wrongfully accused brother. The movie is based on a true story.

"Let Me In," the remake of a 2008 Spanish film, tells the story of a bullied 12-year-old who befriends a vampire in the 1980s. “Let Me In” was the best-reviewed horror film of 2010.


Chocolate and wine pairings continue Sunday at The Mount Nittany Winery at 12:30 p.m. Pairings are sponsored by Chocolate Madness and reservations are required.


The Ramada Inn hosts a Daddy-Daughter Valentine’s Day from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The event will consist of dancing, crafts and sweet treats. Cost is $2 for members and $3 for non-members. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.


Penn State women’s gymnastics hits the floor in Rec Hall at 2 p.m. to take on West Virgina, Pittsburgh and Bridgeport.

Penn State men’s basketball plays Michigan in the Bryce Jordan Center at noon.
