State High Football: Little Lions Blast Central Mountain 71-28
The Little Lions bounced back in a big way Friday night, avenging a week one loss by throttling Central Mountain 71-28 to improve to 1-1 on the year.
State College marched the ball down the field on the opening drive but settled for only a field goal to open up the scoring. Central Mountain's first possession ended when State College's Anthony Paffie-Misher intercepted a pass, returning it for a touchdown, giving the Little Lions a 10-0 lead.
Little Lion quarterback Pat Irwin connected with John Weakland for a 37-yard touchdown pass only minutes later to make it a 17-0 game with 5:49 left in the first quarter.
Despite the early hole, Central Mountain battled back in its next possession on a 13-play, 69 yard touchdown drive, cutting the Lion's to 10. State College responded quickly, returning the ensuing kickoff to the one yard line. The Little Lions punched the ball in to take a 24-7 lead.
Central Mountain continued to fight though and returned the next kickoff deep into Little Lion territory. Another touchdown made it 24-14.
State College began to put Central Mountain out of reach though, scoring on a 33-yard touchdown run on the very next series and then again from six yards out to extend the Little Lion lead to 37-14 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.
Central Mountain fumbled the kickoff giving State College prime field position which the Little Lions capitalized on to make it 44-14. Central Mountain would respond one final time in the half with a 48-yard catch that cut the lead to 44-21 with 11 seconds to go in the first half.
Central Mountain was able to score once more in the second half but a flurry of offensive bombs by the Little Lions blew the game wide open. State College took a 65-28 lead into the final stanza. State College would score one final time in the final quarter.
The Little Lions will host Martinsburg WV for a rare meeting between two schools from different states. State College will take on Harrisburg the following week on the road before returning to Memorial Field for a showdown against Central Dauphin.
