StoryCorps Arrives In Bellefonte; Mobile Recording Studio To Open Thursday

on August 04, 2010 7:20 AM

The MobileBooth, a distinctive Airstream trailer that holds a recording studio, has arrived in Bellefonte.

Run by the national nonprofit group known as StoryCorps, the MobileBooth is scheduled to open Thursday in the Centre County seat, the organization announced. It's parked at the corner of Allegheny and High streets, where it will remain through Sept. 4 as part of a cross-country tour.

StoryCorps' mission is to record, share and preserve stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs, and workers from the group will interview locals and record their stories -- free of charge -- throughout the MobileBooth's stay in Bellefonte. Portions of StoryCorps' work air on "Morning Edition," broadcast via NPR stations nationwide.

In fact, the local NPR station, WPSU, has partnered with StoryCorps for the MobileBooth's extended stay. About 170 interviews will be recorded at the MobileBooth during its local visit; a selection of them will be broadcast on WPSU, according to the station.

StoryCorps interviews also are archived at the Library of Congress, WPSU reported.

Interviews will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the MobileBooth. Those who'd like to be interviewed sometime this month can call the reservation line at (800) 850-4406 or visit http://wpsu.org/storycorps.

A number of interview slots will open for reservations starting at 10 a.m. Friday, WPSU reported.
