Student Reports Shooter at High School As April Fool's Prank

by on April 01, 2015 10:52 AM

One State College high school student may be in serious trouble after an attempted April Fool's prank went awry.

State College Area School District spokesperson Chris Rosenblum says that student texted a family member saying there was a gunman in the high school south building shortly before 9:30 this morning.

The family member immediately called police, and seven State College police officers arrived at the school in about one minute, Rosenblum says.

The high school followed emergency protocols while administrators and police assessed the situation. Police located the student who sent the text, who reportedly admitted the text was meant to be an April Fool's prank. Students have since returned to class and the school day is progressing as usual.

"Police are investigating this from their standpoint of possible criminal charges, and we are investigating this internally from the standpoint of possible disciplinary measures," Rosenblum says.

Rosenblum says any potential disciplinary measures are confidential and will not be released to the public.

Mount Nittany Middle School also went into a brief lockdown when the school's police resource officer heard the report from the high school. The lockdown ended after police were able to confirm the report was a hoax, Rosenblum says.
