TGIF: State College Weekend Events for Aug. 10-12

Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

It's another busy summer weekend around the area. The Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair kicks off on Friday morning and the monthly State College Culture Crawl returns with art, vendors and performers on Sunday.

The State College Spikes host a Penn State football legend for autographs, a meet and greet and bobblehead giveaway, and Tussey Mountain will be busy, with a Movie on the Mountain and the 20th annual State College Brew Expo.

You can also get outdoors for two benefit races, CRPR's FitThon and the final Centred Outdoors of the summer. Or check out concerts, theater and dance.

We've compiled some of the highlights below.

FRIDAY

Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair
Celebrating its 35th year, the Bellefonte Arts and Crafts Fair returns to the streets of downtown Bellefonte after seven years in Talleyrand Park. From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, enjoy food, family activities, live entertainment and the work of more than 70 artists. See the full lineup here. For parking, a free shuttle will run both days from Bellefonte Area High School to downtown.

Ki-Jana Carter Night with the Spikes
The State College Spikes host West Virginia at 7:05 p.m. at Medlar Field. One of the all-time Penn State football greats, Ki-Jana Carter will be on hand to meet and sign autographs, plus the first 1,000 fans will receive a Ki-Jana bobblehead. Ike's Kids Zone is free all game, and after the game will be another post-game fireworks show.

Concert on the Village Green
Lemont Village Association's summer Friday night concert series continues from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the Village Green with the Blind Horse Wagon. Brazilian Munchies food truck will be on hand. 

Movie on the Mountain
Enjoy a movie under the stars as the weekly summer Movies on the Mountain at Tussey Mountain presents "A Wrinkle in Time." Admission is free. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk. Popcorn and candy will be available, as well as hot dogs, and other great food you won't find at regular movie theaters. Soda, beer, and other beverages also are offered. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.

Sense & Sensibility
The Next Stage Theatre Company will perform "Sense & Sensibility," a play by Kate Hamill adapted from the Jane Austen novel, in the Attic at the State Theatre. Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.


SATURDAY

Pixie Dust Wishes Race to Neverland 5k
The second annual Pixie Dust Wishes Race to Neverland 5k and mile walk starts at 8 a.m. at Tudek Park. Accompanying the race will be a festival which includes Disney themed arts and crafts, games, a basket raffle, silent auction and photos with Peter Pan. A Disney-themed costume contest returns this year as well Pixie Dust Wishes is a non-profit organization that grants Disney wishes to children and individuals with special needs/disabilities throughout Pennsylvania. At the conclusion of the 5k, a Disney wish will be presented to the newest recipient. Schedule and details here.

Herbie's Home Town Loop
Herbie's Home Town Loop is a 4-mile run/walk and 10-mile run held in honor of Jeremy Herbstritt, a Bellefonte local and Penn State alum killed in the Virginia Tech school shootings in 2007. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at High and Spring streets in downtown Bellefonte and kicks off the second day of the Bellefonte Arts and Crafts Fair. Funds raised from this year’s race will benefit the Bellefonte Area School District’s renovations at Roger’s Stadium and, specifically, will be earmarked for the track portion of this project.

CRPR FitThon
Test drive all of Centre Region Parks and Recreation's fitness classes in one two-hour mega class from 9 to 11 a.m.at Spring Creek Park on the basketball courts. Each class type will be previewed for 20-30 minutes. Try out as few or as many as you'd like before deciding what fall class to join. Advanced registration preferred. $10 per participant.

Penn State Soccer
The Nittany Lion men's and women's soccer teams gear up for the 2018 campaign with a pair of exhibition matches at Jeffrey Field. The men take on LaSalle at 2 p.m. and the women face Georgetown at 7 p.m.

State College Brew Expo
For its 20th year, the State College Brew Expo will celebrate the commonwealth's craft beer boom by featuring only Pennsylvania beers. Held in conjunction with BreweriesinPA.com for the first time, the expo takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. at Tussey Mountain. The night also includes live music and seminars, and proceeds benefit Coaches Vs. Cancer at Penn State. Tickets

Boundless Bodies
Making its premiere performance, Boundless Bodies Contemporary Ballet will take the audience on a journey of emotions while enjoying an evening of concert dance at 7:30 p.m. at the State Theatre. Proceeds will benefit First Descents, which provides outdoor experiences for young adults impacted by cancer, and Be the Match, a global leader in bone marrow transplantation.


SUNDAY

State College Culture Crawl
The monthly art, vendor and performer festival returns from 1 to 7 p.m. on Calder Way and South Allen Street. The State College Culture Crawl showcase artists while featuring artisan vendors and multiple live performances, with sidewalk sales and giveaways at participating stores. Several eateries also will have drink and dinner specials. The August edition will feature performances by Anchor & Arrow, Caryn Dixon and Happy Valley Improv and a cabaret by State College Community Theatre.

Centred Outdoors
The summer's final Centred Outdoors guided adventure starts promptly at 2 p.m. at Black Moshannon State Park. Hikers will follow the Star Mill Trail near the lake and loop up through the woods to the Southeast end of Moshannon Lake. Features of the hike include a cranberry bog, a colony of carnivorous plants, many blueberries, and numerous historic foundations. The hike will be held again at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. For more information, directions and to RSVP, go here.

Mojatuba
Admission is free to this unique concert at Trinity United Methodist Church, 128 Howard Street in Bellefonte. Featuring Essence of Joy's Tony Leach; Velvet Brown, Penn State professor of tuba and euphonium; and Kikora Franklin, associate professor of dance, Mojatuba is a fusion of dance music for tuba. Concert starts at 3 p.m. and will be followed by a reception.

Music Under the Sycamore
The Centre County Historical Society's annual “Music Under the Sycamore” Summer Party offers a chance to relax under the centuries-old sycamore on the beautifully landscaped grounds of the Centre Furnace Mansion while enjoying the soulful harmonies of Pure Cane Sugar, from 4 to 6 p.m. Bring your family, chairs and blankets. Tickets include music and light refreshments and tours of the mansion. Tickets.

South Hills Music Picnic.
South Hills School of Business and Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, continues its summer concert serieswith The Little German Band. from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Grounds open at 5 p.m. and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, blankets and chairs. Refreshments and light picnic fare also will be available for purchase. 

Summer Sounds from the Gazebo
A seasonal staple in Bellefonte, Summer Sounds from the Gazebo in Talleyrand Park wraps up for the year with Denny Taylor & the Misfits at 7 p.m. Lawn chairs or blankets are suggested.
