TGIF: State College Weekend Events for Jan. 19-21

Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

Much is happening around the area this weekend. From concerts, sports and art to lectures and community events, WWE at the Jordan Center to Fun in the Snow at Black Mo, there's something for everyone over the next few days across the region.

We've compiled a few of the highlights for the next few days and the week ahead.

FRIDAY

"What Big Eyes You Have!"
A new Penn State University Libraries exhibition, “What Big Eyes You Have! Looking at the Wolf in Fairy Tales,” which opened this week in Penn State University Libraries’ Eberly Family Special Collections Library, takes a close look at historical depictions of the wolf in well-known and lesser-known fairy tales, drawing from several sources among Special Collections Library materials.  On display through May 13.

Executive Insight Series
Lt. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, director of the Defense Logistics Agency, will share his perspectives on logistics and leadership at 11:15 a.m in 110 Business Building, University Park, as part of the Smeal College of Business Executive Insight Series. Free and open to the public, but registration is required here.

Gallery Talk at Palmer
Palmer Museum of Art Curator Patrick McGrady will delivery a talk at 12:10 p.m.  in the museum's exhibition gallery on the new exhibition "Dox Thrash, Black Life, and the Carborundum Mezzotint," featuring works of the printmaking pioneer.

MLK Commemoration Evening Celebration
The culmination of a week of events celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. the Evening Celebration at Eisenhower Auditorium will include performances and keynote speaker Amanda Seales, a comedian, actress, writer, producer and former MTV VJ who holds a master’s degree in African-American studies from Columbia University. Free tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis when doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Winter Jam
Among the biggest annual tours in the world, Winter Jam is once again set to showcase a lineup of some of the best and brightest names in Christian music at 7 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Penn State Wrestling
Undefeated and gearing up for another championship run, the Nittany Lion wrestling team looks to extend its 38-dual win streak when it hosts Purdue at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall. A limited number of standing room only tickets are available. Call 1-800-NITTANY for information or to purchase tickets.

Nittany Lion Women's Hockey
The Penn State women’s hockey team returns home from an 11-game road trip to face CHA foe Syracuse for a weekend series. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday in Pegula Ice Arena.

High School Hoops
The State College boys basketball team looks to continue its undefeated season when the Little Lions host Mifflin County for Senior Night. St. Joseph's Catholic Academy looks for its third consecutive win when the Wolves welcome Harmony. Penns Valley hosts Bald Eagle for an intracounty matchup as the Rams look to avenge a season-opening loss, and Philipsburg-Osceola takes the home court against Tyrone. Bellefonte is on the road at Huntingdon.

In girls basketball, State College travels to Lewistown to face Mifflin County, Bald Eagle hosts Penns Valley, Bellefonte welcomes Huntingdon and Philipsburg-Osceola travels to Tyrone. All games are at 7:30 p.m.

St. Joe's girls team travels to Harrisburg Academy for a noon tip on Saturday.


SATURDAY

Preschool Fair
Hosted by MOMS Club of State College and State College Area School District, the annual Preschool Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Mount Nittany Middle School. The fair offers families of young children looking for local preschools an opportunity to meet representatives from many preschools in the area, with one-stop shopping whether you are looking for full or part-time care, faith or play-based education. SCASD staff also will be on hand to answer questions about kindergarten registration, and Soccer Shots, Musikgarten and a craft table will make it a fun morning for kids.

Central PA Women's March
The Central PA Women's March will join others around the country on Saturday advocating for for a number of policies related to human rights issues. Following a march from the Allen Street Gates to the State College Municipal Building, a lineup of speakers will address a variety of issues as they affect central Pennsylvania. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. More info can be found here.

Fun in the Snow at Black Mo
Enjoy a fun-filled day of activities from noon to 4 p.m. at Black Moshannon State Park.Learn new skills such as ice skating and snowshoeing, take a walk to look for winter signs of wildlife, then try cross-country skiing. Try making a snow sculpture, and enjoy sled riding on the sledding hill. Ice bowling, ice mini-golf, and curling will also be set up. Most events will take place near the Environmental Learning Center or Boat Launch #1. Check here for more information.

Young Writers Workshop at Schlow
Recommended for grades 1-6, find out what the Write and Illustrate Your Own Book Contest judges are looking for starting at 2 p.m. in Schlow Centre Region Library's Downsbrough Community Room. Improve your writing skills and discuss mistakes to avoid. Bring your book for a brief personal evaluation starting at 3 p.m. Come with writing questions and ideas, or bring along one or two pages of your book for review. Registration required.

Men's Gymnastics
The Penn State men's gymnastics team faces Army at 4 p.m. in Rec Hall for the Nittany Lions' first home competition of 2018.

WWE Live
WWE returns to the Bryce Jordan Center with WWE Live starting at 7:30 p.m. The night features Roman Reigns vs. The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship, Seth Rollins & Jason Jordan vs. Cesaro & Sheamus for the Raw Tag Team Championship and more.

Mulebone at Elk Creek Cafe 
A blues-based duo comprised of roots music specialist Hugh Pool and multi-instrumentalist John Ragusa, Mulebone has released four critically-acclaimed albums, three reaching the AMA Top 100. They take the stage at Elk Creek Cafe & Aleworks in Millheim at 8 p.m.


SUNDAY

Homeless Care Package Drive and Assembly
About 20 people use the shelter at Houserville UMC House of Hope every night and the WARMTH drive is collecting items for those in need. Items will be collected at several area locations and at 1 p.m. care packages will be assembled at House of Hope, 1320 Houserville Road. Items will be distributed through Hearts for Homeless and Out of the Cold. Check here for more details.

Bridal Expo
The Central PA Bridal Expo returns to the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center from noon to 4 p.m. More than 80 vendors will be on hand to speak to and get ideas to plan your dream wedding, with food samples, specials and features throughout the show. Check here for more details.

Recognition Recitals
The spring semester recognition recitals showcase the Penn State School of Music's most outstanding student performers. The undergraduate recital begins at 2 p.m. and the graduate recital begins at 5 p.m. in 110 Music Building I. Admission is free.

The Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra Presents "Dynamic Duos"
The Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra presents "Dynamic Duos," a unique concert performed by the six married couples in the orchestra. The concert features the music of W.F. Bach, Strauss, Adams, Gliere, Moscheles, Rouse, Rossini, and others. The performance starts at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner St.

MasquerAIDS 2018
Penn State Thespians will present their annual show benefiting the Centre County AIDS Resource Alliance and its work to raise funds and awareness in the fight against AIDS. This year's performance, "Mx." starts at 7:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall of the HUB-Robeson Center and features songs such as “A Lovely Night” from La La Land, “La Vie Boheme” from Rent, and “Sincerely, Me” from Dear Evan Hansen. Tickets are $4.99 at the door.
