TGIF: State College Weekend Events for June 16-18

Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

There is much to do, indoors and outdoors, around the area this weekend. The Bellefonte Cruise returns Friday through Sunday for its 29th year. CelticFest is back at Tussey Mountain on Saturday with Irish music, food and drink and highland games. Central PA Tasting Trail hosts its first Summer Craft Beverage Expo on Sunday.

In music, Rick Hirsch's Big Ol' Band plays The State Theatre, while weekly free concerts continue in State College, Lemont and Bellefonte.

Explore nature with Centred Outdoors and history at Curtin Village, take the kids to touch a truck and much, much more.

We've compiled some of the weekend's highlights below.

FRIDAY

PA on the Patio
From 5:30-8:30 p.m. every Friday this summer, the Nittany Lion Inn hosts an evening on the patio (weather permitting) of all-you-can-eat tapas prepared on a wood-fired grill, live music by Stacy Glen Tibbetts and Pennsylvania microbrews, wines, and spirits. 

Bellefonte Cruise
The Bellefonte tradition kicking off summer returns for its 29th year. A car show and much, much more, the Bellefonte Cruise gets under way Friday with an open cruise at 6 p.m. followed by a sock hop on the diamond. Saturday is the car, truck and motorcycle show with live music, a car giveaway and awards ceremony. Sunday will feature a soap box derby. Check out the lineup here

Concert on the Village Green
The annual summer Friday night concert series continues at 7:30 p.m. with harmonica virtuoso Richard Sleigh performing on the Village Green in Lemont. In the event of rain, the concert will be held inside the Granary.

Rick Hirsch's Big Ol' Band
With an acclaimed new album released in January, State College jazz musician Rick Hirsch brings together his Big Ol' Band, 18 collaborators from around Pennsylvania and the east coast, for a 7:30 p.m. show in The State Theatre auditorium. They will be joined by special guest vocalist Eric Ian Farmer.

Central PA Rodeo
The Huntingdon County Fairgrounds hosts the 13th annual Central PA Rodeo, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

SATURDAY

Civil War Days
The Roland Curtin Foundation presents Civil War Days Living History from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday at the Curtin Village and Eagle Iron Works historic site, 251 Curtin Village Road, Howard. The event will feature an encampment and living history, with artifact displays, period craft demonstrations and educational talks, as well as scheduled drills, demonstrations weapons firing and more.

Buzz Cut Saturday
Kick off the summer with a traditional boot camp buzz cut from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg. Donations accepted or free with admission. And every Saturday and Sunday in June at the museum, receive a personal guided tours starting at 1 p.m. with regular admission.

Boal Mansion Midsummer Celebration
Celebrate Midsummer by volunteering with The Happy Valley Golden Wheel at the Boal Mansion in Boalsburg. The day starts at 10 a.m., with a noon ritual and lunch, Holly and Oak King Tournament, dinner and a bonfire. The event is rain or shine.

Annual Great Outdoor Picnic
Families are invited to Wildlife for Everyone's third annual Great Outdoor Picnic starting at 11 a.m. at Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park in Centre Hall. Kids can learn fly casting, shoot a BB gun or bow and arrow and build a bluebird box. Chainsaw carvers and other artisans will demonstrate their crafts and 15 outdoor sporting organizations will be on hand. Prizes totaling $37,500 will be raffled throughout the day and free food is included with admission. Tickets are $100, admitting two adults. Children 17 and under are admitted free with an adult. WPSU Kids' Day at DelGrosso's Park
Join WPSU for a day of space-themed fun at DelGrosso's Amusement Park in Tipton. Kids can meet and have photos taken with Jet Propulsion from PBS Kids "Ready, Jet Go!," learn about the solar system, make crafts, take home a summer fun booklet and giveaways, and complete a scavenger hunt. Dollar Pool Days
Centre Region Parks and Rec will offer $1 per person admission from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Welch and Park Forest Community Pools.

Touch a Truck
Bring the kids out for an exciting afternoon of big trucks, dump trucks, fire trucks and much more from 1-4 p.m. at the Mount Nittany Middle School parking lot. Climb, touch and investigate in a hands-on experience for the entire family, presented by Centre Region Parks and Rec and Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc.

Tait Farm Shrub Celebration
Tait Farm celebrates 30 years of making fruit shrubs, a unique artisan beverage mixer, with a special event from 2-4 p.m. Otto’s, Barrel 21, Big Spring Distillery and Seven Mountains Winery will make new mixtures, and there will be live music and chef demonstrations of culinary uses for shrub. Children will be welcome at a do-it-yourself station to create their own drinks.

Culinary Week Movie
As part of Happy Valley Culinary Week, The State Theatre will offer free showings of the movie "Burnt" at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Taproot Kitchen will be on hand with fresh, local food.

CelticFest
CelticFest returns to the rolling green hills of Tussey Mountain, featuring authentic food and drink, Irish music and highland games. The festival is from 6-10 p.m. and tickets are available in advance or at the gate. Children 12 and under are admitted free. [More info]

SUNDAY

Centred Outdoors Guided Adventure
The new Centred Outdoors Summer Challenge will host a guided adventure at 2 p.m. at Black Moshannon State Park in Philipsburg. Hikers will follow the Bog Trail near the lake, and loop up to the Seneca Trail to see a cranberry bog, carnivorous plants, and a pond with an artesian spring. Be prepared,it’s soggy. The hike is 1.5 miles and moderate difficulty. [Event details]

PBS Summer Kids Adventure
Join WPSU at 2 p.m. at the State Theatre for a special premiere screening of the all new PBS Kids special "Nature Cat: Ocean Commotion," the first of several premiere screenings this summer. Free, but registration is required.

Summer Craft Beverage Expo
The Central PA Tasting Trail, representing Centre County’s breweries, wineries, distilleries, and cideries, will hold its first Summer Craft Beverage Expo from 3-7 p.m. at Talleyrand Park in Bellefonte. Guests will have the opportunity to taste and purchase a wide variety of quality craft beers, wines and ciders, along with distilled spirits and cocktails, while enjoying live music. Local food vendors also will be on hand with food for purchase. [Ticket info]

International String Trio Free Concert
The Concerts at Trinity presents a special Father's Day Concert with the International String Trio, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Bellefonte UMC, 128 W. Howard St. [Program details

Music Picnic Series
South Hills School of Business & Technology continues its 2017 Music Picnic Series at 6 p.m. with the Rick Hirsch 4 interpreting rock and pop music through their unique filter of post-bop and modal jazz, drum-and-bass, and R&B. These free, outdoor concerts are held rain or shine on the lawn at South Hills,480 Waupelani Drive. All are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and a picnic supper. Refreshments and light picnic fare are available for purchase. Grounds open at 5 p.m.; music starts at 6 p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m.

Summer Sounds from the Gazebo
A Bellefonte summer tradition, Summer Sounds from The Gazebo in Talleyrand Park returns for free concerts every Sunday through Aug. 13. This week Anything Goes performs at 7 p.m. Blankets or lawn chairs are suggested.
