TGIF: State College Weekend Events for May 17-19

Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

It's a busy spring weekend with plenty to get out and enjoy. J.A.M. Fest hits the streets of downtown State College, the inaugural Open Streets Bellefonte offers fun activities like a Ninja Warrior course and inflatable rodeo playground, and the Centre County Master Gardeners host their big annual plant sale at the Ag Progress Days grounds

Summer Shout has free music at South Hills, indie pop band Bad Bad Hats plays a show at Zeno's and DuoDo Quartet performs an Acoustic Brew concert at the WPSU studios.

We've compiled some highlights below.

FRIDAY

Summer Shout
Enjoy a night of free, live music from 4 to 8 p.m. at South Hills School of Business and Technology's Summer Shout Band Stand Jam. Zach Wade & The Good Grief, Paraformer, Culdesac Kids, and C.Leo Bloomfield will perform at the north lawn bandstand, 480 Waupelani Drive.

Voices
The Next Stage Theatre Company presents "Voices," a play by Susan Griffin and directed by Norrine Sims, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in The Attic at The State Theatre. "Five strangers, each trying to find her own voice. Each voice unique, yet part of one story — ours."

Out Loud
This month's Out Loud poetry reading — 7:30 p.m. at Bellefonte Art Museum, 133 N. Allegheny St. — is "Lifting Up Under-Heard Voices," a celebration of diverse words and stories, hosted by Abby Minor and Ridgelines Language Arts. Poet Nico Amador will give a reading of his poems as part of the night.


SATURDAY

Master Gardeners Plant Sale
Expert advice and a variety of unique plants will be featured at the Centre County Master Gardeners Plant Sale, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Ag Progress Days grounds, 2710 W. Pine Grove Rd, Pennsylvania Furnace. The sale will offer more than 5,000 plants, including vegetables, herbs, native species, pollinators and infrequently seen annual, as well as learning tables, a silent auction and gardening activities for kids.

Ethel Beaver Fund 5k
The third annual Ethel Beaver Fund 5k will take place at 9 a.m. in Bellefonte's Governors Park, with registration at 8 a.m. Proceeds benefit the fund for children in the care of Centre County Children and Youth Services. 

For Moms, By Moms
A family-friendly shopping event, For Moms, By Moms offers crafts and direct sales, as well as activities and giveaways and local food for purchase, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at State College Friends School ,1900 University Drive.

Nittany Team Tennis Challenge
Learn while playing and experience competition in a fun team format at this event produced by Centre Region Community Tennis Association at Circleville Park. Morning session for beginners and intermediate age 10-13 is 10 a.m.-noon. Afternoon session for ages 14-18 is 1-3 p.m. $10 participation fee. Register here.

Open Streets Bellefonte
Mount Nittany Health and downtown Bellefonte businesses will host the inaugural Open Streets Bellefonte healthy community event, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Open to all ages and fitness levels, the event will create “paved parks” on parts of Allegheny and High streets, temporarily closing them to motor vehicle traffic. Activity hubs will focus on activities like dancing, yoga, aerobics, and hula hooping, and incorporate other wellness-themed activities like nutritional education, to engage individuals and families in healthy activities, while building community connections.

Two highly anticipated activity hubs to be included in the day’s events are the Ultimate Ninja Warrior Challenge, with features like rock climb steps, trapeze swing, slack line and the warped wall; and a rodeo playground, which includes a western-themed bounce play for children 10 years old and younger.

Ride of Silence
Sponsored by CentreBike and Penns Valley Pedals & Pints, local cyclists join in this worldwide event, a silent, slow-paced 11-mile ride in honor of those who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center and the escorted ride starts promptly at 12:30 p.m., returning to the Penn Stater by 1:30 p.m. An after-party will follow at Good Shepherd Church. J.A.M. Fest
Presented by the Jana Marie Foundation, J.A.M. Fest is a community-wide mental wellness day designed to help increase well-being, build connections, and foster self-expression. Held annually in downtown State College, the event features live music, yoga, meditation, stations for creative expression, artwork to view, and more. There will be live music on South Allen Street from noon to 5 p.m., yoga and performances from 12:15 to 5 p.m. at the MLK Plaza on Fraser Street, and many activities and community organization stations at both locations.

Bad Bad Hats
Up-and-coming Minneapolis-based indie pop band Bad Bad Hats visits Zeno's for a 7 p.m. show., the band's third performance at the Allen Street venue.

DuoDuo
The DuoDuo Quartet presents an unforgettable night of music, song, and dance with an Acoustic Brew concert at 7:30 p.m. in the WPSU studios, Innovation Park. Featuring percussive dancer Nic Gareiss and harpist Maeve Gilchrist, cellist Natalie Haas and acoustic guitarist Yann Falquet, the innovative 75-minute set will be followed by a jam session. If you play an instrument, bring it along for the after-show jam.

 


 

SUNDAY

Celebration of Service
A U.S. Army reunion and memorial service sponsored by the Pennsylvania National Guard commemorates the Pennsylvanian citizen soldier with a military band concert and equipment displays, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, with the 28th Infantry “Iron” Division 90th Annual Memorial Service.

Centred Outdoors at The Arboretum
Enjoy a walk through the Hartley Wood at the Penn State Arboretum and explore the different types of wildflowers and herbaceous plants that make up our backyard with this week's Centred Outdoors event from 2-5 p.m. Learn about the impact of invasive species on the forest landscape and what efforts are taken to manage them. Wrap up the day with a self-guided stroll through the botanical gardens and take in the sights, smells, and sounds of Spring.

Penn's Woods Music 4 You
Cellist Jon Dexter and violinist Debbie Trudeau will share a free concert and conversation about the process of getting a performance from page to stage, with music by Gliere and Cohen, 2 p.m. at the Bellefonte Art Museum, 133 N. Allegheny St.

Sleeping Beauty Ballet
What do fairies, an evil spell, the fate of a princess, the kiss of a prince, and dancing storybook characters have in common? The Sleeping Beauty ballet! Visit Schlow Centre Region Library at 2:30 p.m. as dancers from Nittany Ballet present excerpts of their upcoming spring production.
