TGIF: State College Weekend Events for Nov. 22-24

Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

It's not quite Thanksgiving, but it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Holiday season events kick off with the tree lighting in State College, Home Town Christmas in Milesburg, the Downtown Holiday Open House and seasonal craft and vendor fairs.

You'll also find concerts, including Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy, theater, sports, State College's first Cranksgiving and more.

We've featured some highlights below.

FRIDAY

Downtown Tree Lighting
The holiday season kicks off in downtown State College with the annual tree lighting event from 5:30-8 p.m. The fun starts with dance performances, music, sweet treats, coffee and hot chocolate and a reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" with Mrs. Claus, all before Santa arrives to light the tree. Afterward kids can get their pictures taken with Santa at Kish Bank on Allen Street.

Penn State Hockey
No. 6 Nittany Lion men's hockey hosts No. 11 Ohio State for a two-game series at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday at Pegula Ice Arena.

Jazz in the Attic
Jay Vonada's Organ Trio East original compositions performs original compositions and interprets classics from the Great American Songbook at 7:30 p.m. in the Attic of the State Theatre.

"Museum"
State High Thespians
will open their season with "Museum" a contemporary comedy by Tina Howe, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in State College Area High School's Performance Hall. Tickets are available online or one hour prior to the show at the box office.

Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy
Emerson, Lake & Palmer founding member Carl Palmer brings his celebration of the progressive rock band's legacy to the State Theatre for an 8 p.m. show.

Happy Valley Improv Benefit Show
State College's premier longform improv company Happy Valley Improv performs from 8-9:30 p.m. at 3 Dots Downtown, 137 E. Beaver Ave., in a benefit show for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. 


SATURDAY

Downtown Holiday Open House
Why wait for Small Business Saturday? Kick of your holiday shopping now at locally owned small businesses during the Downtown State College Holiday Open House. Visit your favorite shops, boutiques and restaurants and get a jump start on your shopping list. Enjoy demonstrations, refreshments, raffles, and giveaways throughout the day at participating businesses.

Milesburg Home Town Christmas
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Milesburg's Home Town Christmas features a big craft show and rummage sale at the Community Center, 111 Mill Street, food, homemade soup and baked good sales, carolers throughout town, Crooked House tours, gifts and decorations, appearances by Santa and much more, Boy Scouts will be handing out candy and maps for the town-wide event.

Pixie Dust Wishes Vendor Market
Pixie Dust Wishes, the local nonprofit dedicated to grant Disney wishes to children with special needs, will hold a vendor market from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 867 Grays Woods Boulevard. The event will include a variety of vendors, a basket raffle, snacks, and a few other surprises. 

Winter Reflections Craft Show
The annual Winter Reflections Craft Show & More will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at South Hills School of Business & Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive. This popular event is a great place to find unique and handmade gifts from more than 40 local vendors for everyone on your holiday shopping list. Free parking and admission and the cafeteria will be open.

Cranksgiving
Bicyclists will take part in a fun bike ride, scavenger hunt, and a way to giveback with State College's first Cranksgiving, starting at 9 a.m. at Videon, 2171 Sandy Drive. Participants will ride their bicycle to the list of stores provided at registration, and purchase items on the supplied need list. All food donations will benefit Youth Service Bureau. Participation is free, but registration is required. 

Book Fair
A book fair event throughout the day at Barnes & Noble, 365 Benner Pike, will support the Mid-State Literacy Council. Nine events are scheduled between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., with book discussions, story hour, author readings and signings and more. Holiday Bazaar
State College Music Boosters will hold its first Holiday Bazaar from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at State College Area High School on Saturday, featuring performances throughout the day from student musicians, holiday crafters and vendors, and winter treats prepared by Chef Zach Lorber and State High's Culinary Arts students.

Metropolitan Opera
The State Theatre hosts the Metropolitan Opera HD Live Broadcast Series presentation of composer Philip Glass’s "Akhnaten," at 12:55 p.m.

Penn State Women's Hockey
The Nittany Lion women's hockey team hosts Syracuse for a two-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Pegula Ice Arena.

Penn State Basketball
The Penn State men's basketball team takes on Yale in an NIT Season Tip-Off game at 4 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center.

 


 

SUNDAY

Lady Lion Basketball
The Penn State women's basketball team hosts George Mason at 2 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Sunday Afternoon Live
Adam Swartz Puppets' Sunday Afternoon Live series returns to The State Theatre at 3 p.m. In the first part of the show, puppet detective leads a noir-style adventure to find a missing archeologist, using science and imagination to dig for clues, encountering new and different creatures and needing lots of audience help along the way. After a popcorn break, dance along with the Tir Na Nog Irish dancers.

NCAA Soccer Tournament
Penn State men's soccer, the No. 15 overall seed, hosts an NCAA tournament second round game against Providence or NJIT at 5 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.
