TGIF: State College Weekend Events for Sept. 2-4

Happy weekend, Happy Valley! It's Labor Day weekend, and college football is back.

The State College weekend gets started Friday night downtown with First Friday, this month celebrating Artful Spaces. The Makery celebrates its first anniversary, Penn State men's soccer opens its home schedule and Mount Nittany Winery hosts its annual Wine & Tapas gala.

On Saturday Penn State takes on Kent State at Beaver Stadium, or you can head to Huntingdon for Wine Down Weekend. 

Continue the holiday weekend with First Sunday at the Bellefonte Art Museum, Crickfest in Coburn and Fan Appreciation Night at Medlar Field as the Spikes play the last regular season home game before the playoffs begin

FRIDAY

First Friday
The monthly celebration from 5-9 p.m. in downtown State College is an opportunity to enjoy food, art, music and activities. This month's theme is "Artful Spaces," and you can enjoy an all-ages creative drawing experience in Woskob Family Gallery, see artist Miya Matsui create a work of art at Anthym Running and check out an open-air art exhibit at Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza. Plus, more open galleries, live music, acrobatics, business specials and much more. [Details]

Wine & Tapas... and Jazz
Mount Nittany Winery hosts its annual End of Summer Gala from 6-8 p.m. with appetizers, wines and music from Jay Vonada’s Jazz Quartet. Reservations required.

The Makery Anniversary Celebration
The Makery, 209 W. Calder Way, celebrates its first anniversary at 6:30 p.m.with refreshments, maker stations for all ages, and fun surprises.

Penn State Men's Soccer vs. James Madison
On the night before Penn State football, cheer on Penn State Futbol as the Nittany Lions open their home schedule against James Madison at 7 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.

Richard III
The State Theatre hosts a live HD broadcast of The Almeida Theatre's production of Shakespeare's "Richard III," starring Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave, at 7 p.m. [Ticket info]

SATURDAY

Ocean Discovery Zone
Visit the Ocean Discovery Zone starting at 11 a.m. at FanFest on Curtin Road before the Penn State-Kent State game to learn about oceans. Exhibit visitors can drive an underwater exploration robot and learn about the unique deepwater ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico. Meet marine scientists and discover the tools they use to conduct their deep sea research in the Gulf. The Ocean Discovery Zone is a "Science at the Stadium" outreach activity presented by the Ecosystem Impacts of Oil and Gas Inputs to the Gulf research program, the Center for Marine Science and Technology at PSU, and the PSU Biology department.

Wine Down Weekend
Wine Down Weekend, a wine tasting, music and food event, will be held from 1– 6 p.m. in downtown historic Huntingdon. The event will feature eight wineries, arts and craft vendors, and three stages featuring five musical groups. Tickets required.

Football Opener
James Franklin's Nittany Lions open the 2016 campaign at 3:30 p.m. against Kent State. The home opener will be Youth Football, Cheer and Dance Day. A Scout Celebration will include Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations, who can purchase special ticket packages at a reduced rate by calling 1-800-NITTANY. SUNDAY

Crickfest 2016
The Penns Valley Conservation Association (PVCA) will hold its 14th Annual Crickfest celebration from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at the park in Coburn to honor the Penns Creek Watershed. Enjoy a day of free outdoor activities for all ages, with music, workshops, educational activities, local foods and children’s activities.

First Sunday
First Sunday at the Bellefonte Art Museum features new exhibits, an opportunity to meet the artists from noon to 4 p.m. and a reception and free art activity for children from 1-4 p.m. 

History Talk
Centre County Historical Society hosts a History Talk at 2 p.m. at Centre Furnace Mansion. Dick Pencek will share insights and examples of late 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania rooms with a special emphasis on decorative arts, furniture and fancy forms of everyday objects. 

Spikes vs. Crosscutters
The playoff-bound State College Spikes return to Medlar Field for the final regular season home game with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch against Williamsport. It's Fan Appreciation Night with an array of celebrations and prizes, and there will be post-game fireworks. Plus, one fan will drive away with a Kia from Lion Country Kia.
