Thinking Beyond the Necktie for Father’s Day

by on June 10, 2013 10:50 AM

Father’s Day is rapidly approaching, which means sons and daughters are scrambling to find the perfect gift for dad.

Instead of a few neckties for work or gift card to his favorite restaurant, why not treat your father to something creative that will match his personality and interests? Here are a few gift ideas to spice things up this year.

Custom Work of Art

The paint your own pottery studio 2000 Degrees allows customers to add their own personal twist to pre-fired pottery. Prices vary for the pottery, but there’s only a $6 per hour studio fee (four dollars for children age 12 and younger).

You can personalize a beer stein, wine glass or a coffee mug that reads “Big Daddy” and then the staff will glaze and fire the gift to finish it. The process can take about three days, though, so don’t wait.

2000 Degrees is located at 202 W. College Ave. Click HERE for more information or call (814) 234-1151.

Something for the Weekend Golf Game

Lots of dads love to play golf. And this gadget will give your father an edge over the competition.

The Approach S1 by Garmin ($179.99) combines features of a sports watch and a GPS device that's sure to improve your dad’s golf game. The watch has thousands of courses pre-loaded into it's memory to help dad figure out each hole.

It can also measure his shots and tell him how far he’s walked when the game is over. It doesn’t help with the infamous hook he normally hits around the seventeenth hole though.

Update His Music Collection

If dad is an audiophile, this could be a top hit! Obviously, it's a little difficult for dad to listen to records in the car or at the gym. But with some help from modern technology, dad can enjoy the scratchy goodness of his favorite records with a vinyl converter by Ion.

The company has many different makes and models that range in price. With the special software included, you can help dad convert his vinyl to Mp3 files he can listen to with a digital player.

And, while you’re at it, you can see what music your dad listened to when he was younger. Click HERE for ordering information.

For the Hops Enthusiast

Why not give dad the gift that keeps on giving? At Otto’s Pub and Brewery, Growler Gift Sets are available for $24.99. For the uninitiated, a growler is a 64-ounce jug that you can fill up with beer.

Otto's gift set comes with four Otto’s logo pint glasses, a growler and a coupon so dad can fill his growler with his favorite beer made at the brewery.

And once the growler’s gone, dad can refill it for between $9 and $11, depending on the beer. Otto’s also sells soap and chocolate made with its brews, just in case dad gets bored with the growler.

Ottos is located at 2235 N. Atherton St. in State College. For more information click HERE or call (814) 867-6886.

Hail to the Chef

If your dad is a whiz in the kitchen, check out Kitchen Kaboodle. The store has a variety of tools sure to please dads who can cook. If he likes to fish, then a gourmet Wusthof fillet knife ($59.99) might do the trick.

And a special cutting board by Epicurean ($24.95), with measurements on it to let dad know if his fish is big enough to keep, would make a nice addition.

If grilling is his specialty, dad might appreciate some cooking aids like a steel rack Chicken Leg Roaster ($21.95) or a Vertical Chicken Roaster ($26.95). When dad gets some help in the kitchen, everyone wins.

Kitchen Kaboodle is located in downtown State College at 104 W. Beaver Ave. Click HERE for more information or call (814) 237-8052.

Frame a Moment or Memory

Want to make that picture of you and your father a little more special? Head over to Uncle Eli’s, where custom framing will make any picture stand out.

In the framing shop, they can help you start from scratch or figure out how to add your dad’s personality to a frame. Come with a budget in mind and they will work with you.

And don’t stop with a picture. Frame dad’s favorite jersey or his collection of baseball cards. Uncle Eli's promises that its custom framers will find a way to get your idea up on a wall.

Uncle Eli's is located at 129 E. Beaver Ave. Click HERE for more information or call (814) 238-1987.
