THON 2010: Students Show Support In Costume
A photo of the dance floor looks like a page ripped out of an “I Spy” book, or maybe “Where’s Waldo.” Except the clues go something like: “Run, run, run, as fast you as can. You can’t catch me I’m the…gingerbread man? On the dance floor?
Other unusual sightings include a jester, a carrot and Toad from Mario Kart. Daryl, aka the Gingerbread Man, says he found a good use for his old Halloween costume.
“I’m wearing it to motivate all the people here – all the dancers, all the kids,” says Daryl, a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Al the Jester agrees that his medieval ensemble is a great way to bring a smile to anyone’s face. The costume belongs to Phroth Magazine, the organization Hal is supporting. “Phrothy the Jester” is its official mascot.
“The reactions have been very extraordinarily positive from everyone,” he says, “They keep telling me how much they love my costume.”
Some supporters need only one accessory to be recognized. This is the case with Chris the Toad from Alpha Kappa Psi who’s wearing a poofy red-spotted hat that he found.
“I found it outside of my house Halloween weekend in a bush,” he explains, “I thought it would put a smile on all the kids faces.”
A few feet away a cloak of sparkles sweeps past. Jessica, an SPSCA dancer is sporting the shimmery shawl made especially for her by her moraler to get her “amped up and excited” for the weekend.
So if you ever wanted to see a gingerbread man dance, or a jester roam the mezzanine, THON is the place to be. Keep an eye out for other characters. Nothing is too crazy for this dance party.
