Trump Tabs AccuWeather CEO Barry Myers to Lead NOAA

by on October 12, 2017 10:06 AM

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced he is nominating Barry Myers, CEO of State College-based AccuWeather, to lead the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Myers' nomination is for Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, a position that holds a dual role as administrator of NOAA.

NOAA includes a number of services for weather, ocean and environmental research and information. Among those is the National Weather Service.

Myers has been part of the AccuWeather leadership for decades and in 2007 became CEO. His brother Joel is AccuWeather's founder, chairman and president, and his brother Evan, also a State College Borough Council member, is chief operating officer.

A member of the Penn State Smeal College of Business and Graduate School faculty for 18 years, Myers has a degree in business administration and economics from Penn State and law degree from Boston University School of Law.

A White House news release announcing Myers' nomination said that since he became CEO, AccuWeather "has experienced its highest grossing years, and its largest global web and mobile audience growth. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on the use of weather information."

NOAA's leaders have largely been scientists over the decades since its creation, and though Myers' background is business-oriented, he has been an advisor to NOAA and five National Weather Service directors and a representative to the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization.

Last year, the American Meteorological Society (AMS) named Myers an AMS Fellow for "having made outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years." In 2015, the AMS recognized Myers for leadership in the weather industry and fostering cooperation between private and government weather services.

Myers also has been an invited speaker at the World Meteorological Organization and World Federation of Scientists, among other science and business organizations. He is on the board of directors of the American Weather and Climate Industry Association, the weather industry’s trade association, and is its chief government relations officer.

"Barry Myers is an exceptional nominee and uniquely qualified for this important leadership position as head of the world's preeminent government agency in this field," said Joel Myers in a statement. "His vast knowledge and business experience offers the outstanding qualities needed in the next leader of NOAA. Barry is an award-winning leader in global weather information issues. He is also a leader in the digital weather information space.  On a personal note, as his brother, I have known him all his life, and I know he will be fully dedicated to serve the nation's needs in a rational and ethical way."

Editor's note: Barry Myers is the uncle of Dan Myers, owner of StateCollege.com's parent company, LazerPro Digital Media Group.
