UberEATS Launches in State College

The State College area got another food delivery option this week with the launch of UberEATS in the local market.

A product of Uber Technologies, the parent company of the on-demand ride service app, UberEATS announced in August that it would expand to 31 university communities, bringing it to a total of 85 college towns across the country.

State College is the first Pennsylvania market for UberEATS outside of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The service went live in State College on Monday and the company made the announcement official on Tuesday.

“With the semester in full swing, we’re excited to offer a new, speedy option for food delivery in State College,” said Casey Verkamp, UberEATS general manager for Pennsylvania, in a statement. “We know that Penn Staters have big appetites -- but, along with our restaurant partners, we’re up to the challenge and ready to hit the ground running.

Much like the ride service, UberEATS is an on-demand app that allows users to order from a number of restaurants, both locally-owned establishments and national chains. The service has partnered with about two dozen restaurants in the State College area and is available from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. every day.

Through the app or UberEATS.com, users simply put in their delivery address, select their meals or snacks and place the order, which can then be tracked as its prepared and delivered.

Among the State College area restaurants are the Dante's Restaurants properties -- HiWay Pizza Pubs, The Deli, Liberty Craft House, Inferno Brick Oven & Bar, The Saloon and Bar Bleu.

“Dante’s Restaurants & Nightlife is thrilled to be among the pioneering restaurant partners on UberEATS, State College,” said JP Mills, Dante’s director. "“We’re excited to offer reliable food delivery from all of our scratch-made menus ... All are now conveniently available from our kitchen to your location at the touch of a button.”

Other restaurants available are Primanti Bros., McDonald's, Pizza Mia, Brother's Pizza, Irving's, Sauly Boy's. Mamma Mia's, FIddlehead, Crunchee Munchees, Home Delivery Pizza and Cafe Wow.

The launch of UberEATS marks the latest development in on-demand deliveries in the State College area. Grubhub recently took over operations of OrderUp, which started as LionMenus in State College in 2009 and grew into a national service.

It hasn't just been restaurant delivery, either. InstaCart launched its online delivery service for grocery stores and other retail outlets in the local market in July. Convenience store delivery service Go Puff began operating in State College in December 2016.
