Unofficial Count Shows Michael Black Winning Republican Nomination for State College Mayor

It looks like Don Hahn will have an opponent in the race for State College mayor in November's election.

StateCollege.com took an unofficial count of Republican write-in votes on tally sheets from State College's 19 precincts and found local business owner Michael Black garnered enough Republican write-ins in Tuesday's primary election to win the nomination and appear on the general election ballot.

Black finished second to Hahn, an attorney and former borough council member, in the Democratic primary. No candidate ran on the Republican ballot.

Results are not yet official. The official counting of votes and verification of write-ins by the county begin Friday and results will not be available until at least next week.

Black's campaign sent out a press release on Wednesday stating he had unofficially won enough votes to get the Republican nomination. StateCollege.com's review found 118 write-ins for Black to 82 for Hahn among the 312 write-in votes cast in the race by Republican voters.

"We feel energized by the outpouring of love and support for this campaign" Black said in a release. "I am so inspired by the people who invigorate the spirit of all that is good in State College and Centre County."

According to the state election code, the highest vote getter with at least 10 votes could win the nomination in the borough's mayoral election.

In the Democratic primary, Hahn, an attorney with Stover & McGlaughlin, received 949 votes (43.81 percent) and Black, owner of Black Sun Studio, received 779 (35.96 percent). They were followed by current borough council members Catherine Dauler (292 votes) and Janet Engeman (142 votes).

“The nomination means that I have more doors to knock, more events to attend and more opportunities to listen about what matters to State College,” Hahn told the Centre County Gazette.
