on February 17, 2012 6:23 PM

UPDATE @ 6:23 p.m. Feb. 17: The driver of the tanker was hurt in this crash, according to state police at Rockview.

Identified as Roy A. Dunlap, 47, of Tyrone, he extricated himself from the truck's cab via the front windshield, according to a crash report. He was taken later to Mount Nittany Medical Center. An official report did not immediately list his condition; it classified his injuries as moderate.

Police said the wreck happened at 6:02 a.m. Friday on the southbound on-ramp for Interstate 99 at Grays Woods. The tanker, carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline, was traveling too quickly and rolled onto a median, according to the crash report.

The vehicle flipped onto its left side and caught fire, becoming fully engulfed, the report shows. "For safety reasons, the fire was allowed to burn itself out and was not extinguished," it reads.

Southbound ramps at Grays Woods and Interstate 99 were closed for about three hours, police said. One ramp sustained heavy concrete damage from the blaze and will remain closed until further notice, the crash report notes.

State police, the state Department of Transportation, the Alpha Fire Company and Patton Township police were among the responders at the scene.
