We have great news for everyone who appreciates good, local journalism -- the kind of journalism that covers State College and Penn State vigorously, honestly, fairly, thoroughly, with a knowledge of the issues and the people: just got better.

We are proud to announce that beginning Monday, March 29, veteran reporter and longtime State College resident Adam Smeltz will be joining our Web site as a full-time senior reporter.

For more than a decade, Adam has covered both State College and Penn State in a fashion that has been unmatched. His meticulous reporting, wide-ranging focus and extensive work on such beats as government, campus, police and the courts, neighborhoods and schools have earned him the respect of readers and sources alike.

Adam fits wonderfully with our hyper-local emphasis. He knows the issues, the newsmakers, the history and traditions, the people who make State College so special.

And Adam “gets” the Web; his permanent blog was among the first in the region. He’ll continue that with, reporting news and providing insightful commentary when it happens, not just once a morning.

A Penn State graduate, Adam has written for big chains like Knight Ridder Inc. and Gannett Co. Inc. He knows cookie-cutter and corporate. He prefers College Ave., the HUB and Atherton Street.

As an everyday writer and columnist, Adam will bring readers to, keep them here and keep them coming back. He is the latest in’s commitment to providing the best news and information to our site, including:

-- The finest young editor around, Terry Casey, the former editor-in-chief of The Daily Collegian, who knows the campus audience and beats better than anyone.
