We have great news for everyone who appreciates good, local journalism -- the kind of journalism that covers State College and Penn State vigorously, honestly, fairly, thoroughly, with a knowledge of the issues and the people:

StateCollege.com just got better.

We are proud to announce that beginning Monday, March 29, veteran reporter and longtime State College resident Adam Smeltz will be joining our StateCollege.com Web site as a full-time senior reporter.

For more than a decade, Adam has covered both State College and Penn State in a fashion that has been unmatched. His meticulous reporting, wide-ranging focus and extensive work on such beats as government, campus, police and the courts, neighborhoods and schools have earned him the respect of readers and sources alike.

Adam fits wonderfully with our hyper-local emphasis. He knows the issues, the newsmakers, the history and traditions, the people who make State College so special.

And Adam “gets” the Web; his permanent blog was among the first in the region. He’ll continue that with StateCollege.com, reporting news and providing insightful commentary when it happens, not just once a morning.

A Penn State graduate, Adam has written for big chains like Knight Ridder Inc. and Gannett Co. Inc. He knows cookie-cutter and corporate. He prefers College Ave., the HUB and Atherton Street.

As an everyday writer and columnist, Adam will bring readers to StateCollege.com, keep them here and keep them coming back. He is the latest in StateCollege.com’s commitment to providing the best news and information to our site, including:

-- A team of regular columnists covering town and campus. It’s a group unsurpassed throughout Central Pennsylvania: Russell Frank, Jay Paterno, Mike Poorman, Mike the Mailman, Patty Kleban, Joe Bastardi and Joe Battista.

-- The finest young editor around, Terry Casey, the former editor-in-chief of The Daily Collegian, who knows the campus audience and beats better than anyone.

--A directory of more than 400 local businesses and organizations, by far the largest such warehouse of local information on the Web, and easily accessible through several channels.

--Unique Penn State football coverage and commentary so insightful that national outlets like ESPN and Yahoo link to it, as do several local and football specialty sites.

Like the wonderful addition of Adam Smeltz, these underscore our commitment to the community and to growing our Website and readership -- which now boasts more than 200,000 unique visitors and 4 million page views per month.

If you have a story idea for Adam or just want to say “hi,” please feel free to email him at [email protected]. You can also follow him on Twitter at http://twitter.com/scnewsdesk or contact him via our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/StateCollegeCom.
