Vice Chairman Masser Apologizes to Board of Trustees for His `Cover-Up' Comments

Keith Masser, Vice Chairman for the Board of Trustees, had come under fire for his recent comments about a potential cover-up in the child sex abuse trial involving Jerry Sandusky.

Masser apologized to the board Wednesday in a statement.

“It was inappropriate to make the comments I did,” he said. “I regret saying the things that were reported in the media. Though there is still a lot of emotion felt by many, we all need to continue to show restraint to wait for facts before making conclusions.

“It is wrong to speculate about outcomes and is not constructive to the legal process. I remain
fully accountable to this misstep and assure you it will not happen again.”

In an interview with the Associated Press late last week, Masser said he thought Penn State officials had knowledge of the alleged sexual proclivities of Sandusky, the school’s former defensive coordinator, and they conspired to cover it up.

Masser said when the board ousted former President Graham Spanier Nov. 9, it was “because we didn’t have confidence in his ability to lead us through this crisis. We had no idea (at the time) he would be involved in a cover-up.”

Masser also said in the story that the investigation being conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh was helping Penn State get to the bottom of the scandal.

“I hope the truth comes out, and from a board standpoint it was Judge Freeh’s investigation that found these emails that relate Spanier, (former athletic director Tim) Curley and (former senior vice president for finance and business Gary) Schultz to the suspected cover-up,” Masser said.

“I want the alumni to understand and the stakeholders to understand that this independent investigation is uncovering this information.”

On Monday, the Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship alumni organization called for Masser’s resignation from the board.
