Watch: Centre County League of Women Voters Candidates Night

by on October 24, 2018 1:00 PM

The Centre County League of Women Voters on Monday hosted its semiannual Candidates Night. But things were a bit different this time around.

For a midterm election, the League would normally feature candidates for congressional races as well as for state House and Senate. But the two Republican congressional incumbents representing Centre County -- Glenn Thompson in the 15th District and Tom Marino in the 12th District -- declined to participate, and the U.S. Election Commission requires that nonprofits hosting forums for federal races have candidates from both major parties in attendance.

So not to jeopardize its nonprofit status, the League's portion of the night included only candidates for state House and Senate in Centre County. Immediately following that, Democratic congressional challengers Susan Boser (15th District) and Marc Friedenberg (12th District) fielded questions in a forum hosted by the Centre Daily Times.

The state House debates had one absence as well. Democrat Mike Hanna Jr. and Republican Stephanie Borowicz are running for the 76th District seat currently held by Hanna's father, who is retiring. Borowicz did not respond to the League's requests to participate. Borowicz, who ran against Mike Hanna Sr. in 2016, also did not respond to requests to participate in a forum to be hosted by the Lock Haven Express and did not participate in C-NET candidate interviews, which were conducted by StateCollege.com.

In the 77th District, Democratic incumbent Scott Conklin is running unopposed.

The Candidates Night forum included:
