West College Avenue Reopens After Gas Leak

by on June 19, 2017 9:59 AM

A section of West College Avenue was closed for more than an hour and a half Monday morning because of a gas leak.

The road was blocked off in the area of the 900 to 1100 block, between the College Avenue/Beaver Avenue split and Corl Street from about 8:30 a.m. to about 10 a.m.

Ferguson Township Police Sgt. Chris Albright said that contractors working on the township's streetscape project were attempting to remove a tree stump. It appears the roots of the tree had grown around the gas line and when they attempted to pull the stump out it ruptured the line.

Columbia Gas crews were on the scene and sealed the leak. After a final sweep of nearby buildings to check gas levels, the road was expected to be reopened to traffic at about 10 a.m.

Alpha Fire Company also responded to the scene.
