What To Know About Penn State Hockey's 2017-18 Schedule

by on May 04, 2017 3:15 PM

Penn State hockey announced its 2017-18 season schedule on Thursday and there are plenty of notable changes including the official introduction of Notre Dame as a partial Big Ten Conference member. The Nittany Lions and Irish played in South Bend last season with Penn State tying and defeating Notre Dame in the process. The Irish would go on to make the Frozen Four later that same year.

“With the addition of Notre Dame to the Big Ten we are adding four tough games against a 2017 Frozen Four team and a perennial hockey giant,” Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky said in a release. “This will make an already extremely competitive league that much more challenging.”

Here is what you need to know about Penn State's 2017-18 campaign as the Nittany Lions look to return to the NCAA Tournament following its first-ever appearance last season.

Exhibition Game:

With a fairly limited practice schedule prior to the season opener, Penn State will face Ottawa University in an exhibition game on Sunday, Oct 1. at Pegula Ice Arena.

Season Openers:

Penn State will open the season on the road against Clarkson and St Lawrence playing both teams just once on back-to-back nights. The Nittany Lions will play Clarkson first on Friday, Oct. 6 before traveling 11 miles to face St Lawrence the very next night.

Big Ten Comes Early:

With the addition of Notre Dame to the conference schedule and the Big Ten Tournament lasting three weekends, Big Ten play will start much earlier in the year. As a result, the Nittany Lions will head to Minnesota the second weekend of the season, the Thursday/Friday series will make for five games in the opening 13 days of the season, including the exhibition contest.

Penn State will then have a 26 day break for finals and the holidays before returning to action with four straight home games against Wisconsin (Jan. 5-6) and Ohio State (Jan. 12-13). The Nittany Lions then hit the road the next two weeks traveling to Michigan (Jan. 19-20) and Wisconsin (Jan. 26-27).

Home Opener:

Penn State will kick off the home schedule with a Thursday/Friday series against American International on Oct 19/20th. Penn State football's home game against Michigan is Oct. 21 and the only weekend that both teams will be playing in State College. Similarly, Penn State hockey will then spend the next two weekends at home hosting Michigan and then Mercyhurst.

Arizona State:

Penn State will travel to Arizona to face former club rival turned Division I newcomer in Arizona State on Nov. 17/18 for the farthest trip west in the continental US in program history.

Robert Morris:

The Nittany Lions will have another travel filled weekend on December 8/9 as the Nittany Lions play Robert Morris in Pittsburgh that Friday before traveling back to State College for a Saturday night game against the Colonials to finish out the home-and-home series.

New Format:

The 2018 Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament will feature a new three-weekend format with all games taking place on the campus of the higher-seeded teams. The tournament will open March 2-4 with three best-of-three quarterfinal series, as the second-, third- and fourth-seeded teams will each host a series. The top-seeded team will have a bye to the single-elimination semifinals, which are scheduled for Saturday, March 10. The highest-seeded team remaining after the semifinals will host a championship game scheduled for Saturday, March 17.
