Winter Storm Causes Closings and Cancelations

With a winter storm moving in to the Centre Region some closings and cancelations have been announced for Wednesday.

That includes local school districts, which are all closed, and Penn State, where classes and activities are canceled until 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for most of central Pennsylvania, including all of Centre County, from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. NWS and AccuWeather are forecasting 4 to 6 inches of snow for the State College area, with the potential for about one-tenth of an inch of ice as mixed precipitation falls later in the day.

Travel throughout the day on Wednesday is expected to be difficult. PennDOT has urging drivers to avoid traveling on Wednesday and for those who must travel to use caution. Maximum speeds have been reduced to 45 miles per hour on I-80 in Clearfield, Centre, and Clinton counties; I-99 in Centre County; and Route 22/322 in Juniata, Mifflin, and Centre counties.

Following are some area cancelations, closings and other weather-related info. This will be updated as new information becomes available.

Schools

State College, Bellefonte, Bald Eagle, Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola school districts are all closed

Penn State

Classes and activities are canceled until 5 p.m. Classes or activities that begin at or after 5 p.m. will be held as scheduled. FOr emplpoyees scheduled to report before 5 p.m., Only those previously identified as performing essential services should report as regularly scheduled, unless advised otherwise by their supervisor.

CATA

CATA Bus NE, RC, RP, VE & WE Routes will not operate on Wednesday. All other service will operate as schedule but with weather related delays. The customer service center, 108 E. Beaver Ave., will close at noon and reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Mount Nittany Health

Mount Nittany Medical Center, including the emergency department and lab and imaging services, will remain open. The following Mount Nittany Health services will be closed:

- All Mount Nittany Physician Group practices

- Lab and imaging services at Mount Nittany Physician Group locations

- Sleep medicine services at Mount Nittany Health – Sieg Neuroscience Center

- Mount Nittany Health Surgical CenterMount Nittany Health Center for Wound Care (Includes Diabetes Foot Clinic)

- Mount Nittany Health Pain Management Center

- Children’s Advocacy Center of Centre County, Mount Nittany Health

- Mount Nittany Health cardiac rehabilitation program

- Mount Nittany Health pulmonary rehabilitation program

Parents may still call the Mount Nittany Physician Group Pediatrics office at 814-466-7921 to talk with a provider.

Schlow Centre Region Library

Schlow Centre Region Library is closed and will reopen at noon on Thursday.

Centre Region Active Adult Center

The County Office on Aging has canceled all meal and transportation services to the senior centers and the Centre Region Active Adult Center is closed.

Discovery Space

Closed on Wednesday.

Centre County Historical Society

Closed on Wednesday

Centre County Women's Resource Center

Offices are closed on Wednesday. CCWRC's hotline (1-877-234-5050) is available 24 hours a day and more information is available at ccwrc.org

Snow Emergencies

Snow emergencies have been declared in College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton townships, meaning cars must be removed from the street until snowfall has ended and roads have been plowed. College and Ferguson townships asked that cars be moved on Wednesday night, while Patton Township's snow emergency goes into effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday and Harris Township's at 8 a.m. Wednesday. 

State College had not yet issued a snow emergency on Tuesday night but borough parking regulations require vehicles to be removed from the street when snowfall reaches 3 inches.

Penn State has declared a "Midnight Clear" for midnight to 7 a.m. on Wednesday and midnight to 7 a.m. on Thursday. During that time, parking is prohibited in most faculty/staff surface lots. More details are available here
