Winter Storm to Impact Thanksgiving Travel, State College School's Closed

Update 1:45 p.m. Both westbound lanes of I-80 between Lamar and Bellefonte are now open.

Thanksgiving travel is shaping up to be a long hard road this year. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Centre County and much of central Pennsylvania.

The State College Area School District has canceled classes on Tuesday because of the weather.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of western Pennsylvania. Weather-related travel problems are expected all along the eastern seaboard.

A wintry mix is in the forecast. Up to five inches of snow is possible along with ice and freezing rain. This is happening at a time when millions of Americans hit the roads.

Westbound lanes of Interstate-80 between Lamar and Bellefonte were closed early Tuesday morning due to a multi-vehicle accident. At 6:30 a.m. one westbound lane was reopened. PennDot expects all lanes to reopen later in the morning.

The slippery mess is making travel hazardous on one of the busiest travel holidays of the year. You should use caution when driving.

It's expected that the snow will turn to a mix of freezing rain and ice Tuesday before turning to plain rain tonight. The rain will turn back to snow as it tapers off Wednesday.

Winds will hit five to ten mph Tuesday morning but will increase to 10 to 20 mph on Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the lower 30s. The weather could also cause power outages.

The Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday until 1 p.m. Wednesday.
