Wintry Mix Threatens to Turn Roads Icy

by on December 01, 2014 6:30 AM

Just a week after a pre-winter storm dumped several inches of snow on State College, we may see a different type of seasonal precipitation -- the much more slippery variety.

A wintry mix is in the forecast for Tuesday. And that could spell trouble for anyone who needs to get around.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory that will be in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 1 a.m. Wednesday.

AccuWeather Senior Vice President Joe Sobel says, "There could be enough snow and then sleet and freezing rain late [Tuesday] morning into the evening to make things pretty slippery for awhile."

The streets will probably be clear early in the day, but up to an inch of snow could fall before a switch to freezing rain sometime Tuesday afternoon. "Surfaces that have not been treated are likely to still remain icy and slippery into the evening," says Sobel.

Overnight temperatures should rise and the roads should be wet Wednesday morning. You can expect the weather to be variable in the days ahead.

"We'll have a roller coaster ride in terms of temperatures," says Sobel. "It'll be milder Wednesday. It will get well on up into the 40s and maybe even to near 50 and chillier on Thursday and Friday."

And with temperatures expected to be in the 30s later in the week there is the possibility of some light snow or flurries late Friday.

With a slippery mix expected on Tuesday, PennDot says you shouldn't travel when you don't have to and advises motorists to follow these safety tips.

  • Carry a winter emergency kit
  • Slow down and increase your following distance
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full
  • Use extra caution on bridges and ramps where ice can often form without warning
  • Carry a cell phone
  • If you do become stranded it's better to stay with your vehicle until help arrives
