Woman Found Guilty of Assaulting Police Officer

A Centre County jury on Tuesday found a State College woman guilty of multiple charges stemming from an incident last April in which she reportedly assaulted a police officer.

Beth Love Ybarra, 51, was found guilty of felony aggravated assault, as well as misdemeanor counts of simple assault, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Centre County District Attorney's Office. Presiding Judge Thomas Kistler also found Ybarra guilty of summary counts of disorderly conduct and harassment.

A State College Police officer responded on April 25, 2016 to a report of a woman outside of a South Barnard Street residence yelling at passersby. Police said she was visibly intoxicated and drinking wine when they arrived. She allowed the officer inside and police found a glass pipe for smoking marijuana. After verifying Ybarra's blood alcohol level did not warrant calling EMS, the officer told her to go back inside and sober up for her own safety, according to the criminal complaint filed last year, and that she would be charged for having drug paraphernalia. As the officer was about to leave, Ybarra began yelling again and was again told to go inside.

The officer saw maintenance workers and the building owner and was going to approach them to tell them to call police if Ybarra continued her behavior, at which point Ybarra began yelling and running to the back of the building with her glass of wine.

Police decided to take her into custody. When an officer attempted to cuff her she resisted and fell back wards then kicked the officer multiple times, including three or four times in the groin. She continued to struggle and strike at the officer until he regained control and another officer arrived with a hobble restraint.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 16.
