Workers Equipped With Nerves of Steel Set Up Second Tower Crane Downtown

by on March 19, 2015 6:15 AM

Crews using highly specialized equipment have been working all week long to install a second tower crane that will be used to build the Metropolitan, a 12-story mixed use building located at the intersection of West College Avenue and Atherton Street.

They're called tower cranes for good reason because they "tower" more than 250 feet in the air, supported by a slender support column.

A stretch of College Avenue has been closed since Monday while workers piece together that second crane, often doing their job in perilous-looking positions.

Powerful winds delayed the work on Tuesday and again on Wednesday. Supervisors are hoping to wrap up the job sometime Thursday. Once that second crane is firmly in place, you can expect detours on West College Avenue to be removed.
