Penn State fans got their first glimpse into the future of the men's program Tuesday morning after the school released its schedule for the 2012-13 season, its first at the NCAA Division I level since 1946-47.
The Nittany Lions will compete as an independent and play 23 games against Division I opponents from all five conferences -- Atlantic Hockey, CCHA, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East and WCHA.
In all, Penn State will play host to 16 games at Greenberg Ice Pavilion on campus for one final season before the opening of the Pegula Ice Arena, a 6,000-seat multi-purpose arena being built on the corner of Curtin Road and University Drive, that will houses both the men's and women's hockey teams starting in 2013-2014.
"This brings us one step closer to dropping the puck on Penn State's first NCAA Division I season," Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky said. "We've been able to schedule some marquee matchups both home and on the road that will help provide a measuring stick for the program moving forward."
Some highlights of the Nittany Lions' schedule include four matchups against future Big Ten Conference opponents Michigan State and Wisconsin and a trip to Schenectady, N.Y., for a pair of games Nov. 23-24 against 2012 Frozen Four participant and ECAC Hockey champion Union.
Penn State will also take part in several neutral-site games at The Wells Fargo Center, home of the Philadelphia Flyers for a game against Vermont, and the Consol Energy Center, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, as part of the Pittsburgh College Hockey Invitational.
The season gets under way Friday, Oct. 12, at home against American International. The complete schedule can be seen here
