The Faculty Senate could vote to make a public statement it will also send to the NCAA sanctioning board regarding the penalties imposed on Penn State in July.
A motion to endorse the statement by 30 past chairs of the Penn State Faculty Senate condemning the Freeh Report and NCAA Sanctions will also come before the senate at its regular meeting on Tuesday.
In August, there was some debate over whether to communicate with the NCAA in an attempt to have the organization reconsider the sanctions. Faculty senators disagreed over whether to move forward or try and seek redemption for individual students who have had scholarships sacrificed and wins vacated.
During that same meeting, former chairman John Nichols presented the statement to current senators that said the Freeh report has done nothing but damage the Penn State community at large and the fallout it caused.
Per Tuesday's agenda, the proposals will be presented by Keith Nelson, a professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Patricia Koch, a professor in the College of Health and Human Development, respectively.
There will be 15 minutes allotted for information and discussion on each subject. Nelson submitted a statement to the senate, offering a glimpse into his belief as to what the senate's responsibility is on the subject of the sanctions.
"The recent NCAA sanctions accepted by Penn State obviously touch on many issues of long interest to the Faculty Senate. Accordingly, it is appropriate to have an open discussion of our perceptions of these sanctions and of where they fit in the landscape of past sanctions of other universities and colleges by the NCAA, of shared governance at Penn State and our responsibilities as the Senate, of the process by which the final sanctions were negotiated and agreed to by President Erickson, and whether as a body the Senate would like to make a statement to the NCAA and/or to the public," Nelson wrote.
The Faculty Senate meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. in 112 Kern Graduate Building on campus. The agenda can be found online as well as links to each document.
