Penn State Football: Junior College Transfer Jake Waters Tabs Kansas State
Updated at 1:48 p.m.
Iowa Western quarterback Jake Waters announced Thursday morning that he'll be taking his talents to Kansas State — not Penn State — starting this January.
"I can see myself playing at both schools," Water said. "But in my gut it's the best thing for me as a student and a player."
Waters would have provided the Nittany Lions with a second quarterback on the spring depth chart, as sophomore Steven Bench is the only quarterback currently on the roster. Bench saw playing time in Penn State's early season 17-16 loss at Virginia while starting quarterback Matt McGloin sat out with a brief injury.
In the final weeks of Waters' recruitment, he narrowed down his options between Kansas State and the Nittany Lions. Bill O'Brien visited Waters earlier in the week at his home.
"I told the coaches the other day that I was leaning their way," Waters said of Penn State. "But something just clicked and in my gut I knew where I was supposed to be."
Highly touted quarterback commit Christian Hackenberg is scheduled to join the team in the summer. However, Hackenberg cannot sign his letter of intent until Feb. 6, 2013.
Penn State will likely pursue other run-on or junior college transfer options in the coming days and weeks. Junior college quarterback Tyler Ferguson, another Penn State target, had committed to Houston on Thursday morning, according to multiple reports. However, Penn State has reached out to Ferguson, according to the Penn State football website, Lions247.com.
