Jeff Byers: Speaking of Local Current Events

Time does fly when you’re having fun and Quentin Wright’s career has seemingly gone by in a flash. It is always a little bittersweet when the career of one of the greats draws to an end. The senior has provided many memorable moments, but my favorite is still his standing cradle pin of Grant Gambrall in the NCAA semifinals that unofficially signaled the beginning of the Nittany Lions‘ reign as NCAA champions. The best, though, may be yet to come.

Speaking of the NCAA....

If and when Mark Emmert resigns or is forced out as president of the NCAA, here’s hoping the NCAA goes the papal route and provides smoke signals to let us know when the next president has been installed. I suggest it keeps burning stuff at the NCAA offices until it gets white smoke. No, not yet, keep going. No, not yet, keep going.

Speaking of going...

With Rec Hall now hosting sellout crowds for wrestling and consistently large crowds for women’s volleyball and women’s gymnastics, might it be possible to get facilities to accommodate the fans? The parking is woeful, the concessions are poor (not that overcooked hot dogs on stale buns don’t have some appeal), but the restrooms are really in desperate need of an upgrade. If I can’t p— and moan, I’d like to be able to at least p—. Not that I want to throw a wet blanket on the Rec Hall experience.

Speaking of peeing on people....

The International Olympic Committee has managed to anger the entire sporting community in voting to eliminate wrestling from the 2020 Games. Of course, the IOC may be going a little far in considering dropping the marathon from the 2024 Games. Then again, with dodgeball and beer pong up for consideration, maybe the committee is on to something. Actually, it appears the committee is just on something.

Which reminds me...

A woman was recently pulled over in Tennessee for having a marijuana decal on her vehicle. It turns out that the decal was actually an Ohio State Buckeyes decal. Just proves what football fans have known along - the Buckeyes go to pot in the SEC. It does explain the long lines for brownies at the tailgates in Columbus.

Speaking of tasty grub...

First the Hooters in State College closed, now the Hooters in Altoona has closed. I tried to support both Hooters by lending a helping hand whenever possible. Central Pennsylvania has lost two Hooters, and I, for one, hope it can bounce back in a big way.

Speaking of boobs and beer...

State Patty’s Day is almost upon us again - where does the faux year go? I grew up with the Phi Psi 500 and the Sy Barash Regatta, so I’m familiar with the party weekends to blow off some steam. But at least there was some good coming out of those events with money raised going to charitable organizations. Has anyone with State Patty’s Day thought of a way to make this a fundraiser, perhaps with money going to the survivors of child abuse? Just a thought.

Speaking of the Jerry Sandusky case....

Did anyone else notice that ESPN Radio’s hosts were struggling mightily with the facts when talking to Jay Paterno last week. Just to correct the record, Mike Golic - Sandusky was not arrested in 1998. And just to correct the record, Colin Cowherd, Sandusky was not on Joe Paterno’s coaching staff in 2001.

Speaking of not having your facts straight...

There will be more turnover on the Penn State Board of Trustees and with it the promise - or at least the hope - for some real leadership to govern the university. Scott Conklin’s bill needs to move forward as well if Penn State is to get real, meaningful reform. For now, the alumni can change the makeup three members at a time. It looks to be a crowded field once again running for the three open seats this spring.

Speaking of open seats....

It is getting tough for the men’s basketball team to fill seats in the Bryce Jordan Center. Losing Tim Frazier did not help. Losing every Big Ten game has taken its toll. With the wrestling team, hockey team and women’s basketball team all looking to have huge followings and plenty of success again next year, men’s basketball is going to have a tough time carving out a niche for itself. Perhaps a concert after each game only for fans who attend? Maybe Lady Gaga, or whoever is hip next year, could lead it off.

Speaking of little monsters...

So, is it just me or do Pennsylvania schools have two-hour delays at the first threat of precipitation any more? When did bus drivers in Pennsylvania lose the ability to drive in snow? Great message for the kids as they prepare for the real world. Now, if there was a meteor coming, that would be something else altogether.

Speaking of the end....
