You may have heard this before, but Christian Hackenberg is good at throwing a football to his teammates.

So good in fact that he might just find himself blowing up records by the end of the year.

With three weeks under his belt this season, Hackenebrg has 1,082 yards to his name. That's good enough for sixth best in the nation -- making him the only Big Ten quarterback in the Top 10 (although Illinois' Wes Lunt comes in at No. 11). Either way, it's clear that Hackenberg's statistically strong start to 2014 is turning heads inside and outside of Happy Valley.

What will be even more interesting to watch in the coming weeks is whether Hackenberg is able to keep his numbers up as he takes a run at the Big Ten single season passing record set in 2006 by Curtis Painter.

Hackenberg's 1,082 yards put him 2,904 yards behind Painter's record. With 10 more games on the schedule (assuming the Nittany Lions make a bowl game) that means Hackenberg needs to toss for 290 yards a contest the rest of the season to call it his.

Obviously week-to-week performances will have an impact as the season progresses. But with Hackenberg yet to throw fewer than 36 times a game in 2014, and a fairly soft schedule coming down the road, it certainly seems like he can stay on track.

If Hackenberg does lay claim to the Big Ten record, it's entirely possible for him to set Penn State's career passing record in the process. In just over a season Hackenberg's 4,037 yard total puts him 3,175 behind Zack Mills. To surpass Mills on the All-Time list, Hackenberg would need to pass at a 317/game pace.

Stats can be overrated though. Penn State's two and three point victories this season have shown that yards don't equal touchdowns. If Hackenberg truly wants his stats to mean something he and his offensive counterparts will have to find a way to end drives in the endzone more frequently.

Ultimately though, Hackenberg continues to assault the record books and that can only mean good things for Penn State.
