Discovery Space Names New Executive Director, Seeks Larger Space to Accommodate Growth
The children's center in downtown State College that gives children hands-on opportunities to learn about science has named a new executive director.
The Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania in the 100 block of West Foster Avenue may also relocate in the future.
The Discovery Space board recently named Allayn Beck as executive director of the museum. Beck was previously serving as interim director after Art Heim stepped down last year.
A search committee, consisting of members of the community and the board of directors, selected Beck following a six-month search process.
"I'm really looking forward to taking the Discovery Space into our next phase of growth," Beck told StateCollege.com.
That next phase will include moving the Discovery Space into a larger location, Beck says, as the center's popularity continues to grow. The museum needs a larger space to accommodate its existing programming and to offer new programs. It's possible, the Discovery Space could move outside borough limits.
"We are exploring all of our options and we have bee so thankful for the borough's support," says Beck.
Currently, the museum offers programming for children between 2 and 12. The goal, Beck says, is to offer opportunities for children under 2 as well as teenagers.
"Everything is going to grow. I'm hoping and foresee expanding our programs throughout the Centre Region," says Beck. "I think with a bigger stage we'll definitely be able to reach a broader age range of children."
Roger Bagwell, chair of the Discovery Space's board, says Beck will help lead the expected changes.
"We are extremely pleased with how Discovery Space has grown over the last three years, both in terms of exhibits, but also in the programs and outreach we offer," says Bagwell. "Allayn has been a critical part of that growth, and we are thrilled to have someone so talented and dedicated to the community lead us in the next phase."
