Conklin Re-appointed Democratic Chair of Children and Youth Committee
State Rep. Scott Conklin (D-Rush Township) has been re-appointed Democratic chairman of the House Children and Youth Committee for the 2017-2018 legislative session.
This will be Conklin's second term as the committee's Democratic chair, having first been appointed in 2015. The majority chair is Rep. Katharine Watson of Bucks County.
"Pennsylvania children remain high on the list of our most vulnerable," Conklin said in a statement. "This position allows us to narrow the focus on doing everything we can in the best interest of our youngest citizens. The work of this committee has been known to be very effective, deliberate and productive. I look forwarding to continuing that work."
Conklin is in his sixth term representing the 77th State House District, which includes all of State College, Huston Township, Philipsburg and Rush Township and parts of Ferguson Township and Patton Township. He ran unopposed in the 2016 primary and general elections.
He said addressing the needs of children affected by the Pennsylvania heroin and opioid epidemic is a priority for the committee this session.
"Not addressing this issue would be turning our backs and covering our ears," Conklin said. "We lose too many young people every day through drug overdoses. We lose too many parents everyday through drug overdoses that leave small children behind. It's a trickle-down effect and it's not stopping until we address it."
